Dirty Deeds Prevails In Beldame

The Beldame (Grade 1)- $400.000 Purse
BEL- For Fillies and Mares Three Years Old and Upward
One Mile and One Eighth on the Dirt
September 30, 2017

Last year, on the 24th of September, Dirty Deeds went down to PRX and beat some of the greatest horses in her division in what was a very difficult Cotillion (Grade 1). This year, Dirty Deeds shows that she loves racing in late September, although the field in the Beldame was not anything like what it was in the Cotillion last year. That win sent her to the BC Distaff, and while the result did not go as planned, that is still an accomplishment. She seemed to have one main challenger in this race, that being Heart Nebulae, to her inside. We called it as a two horse race between these two, and in the end that is what happened. Somewhere along the line though, Various became a 1/5 favorite. That made Dirty Deeds a 13/1 shot. Unbelievable. An exacta that really should have only been $6.80 between these two became a worthwhile play and return at $56.30. The proud winning trainer is Aer Stables, who wins the race for the first time. Her rider, I Ortiz Jr, can also cross this off the list of stakes that he had not won yet. Congratulations to them! The time of the race was 1:48.31. Let’s take a look at it!

(½ Mile- :47.45)- The race could not have started out any better for Dirty Deeds and Aer Stables. The filly breaks out to the early lead, but did not have to kill herself in the process. Various, that stunning 1/5 favorite, from Mb Stables, ran with her for a little while, but would soon drop back by a length and a half. After running half a mile, Dirty Deeds maintained that same lead, but this fraction was very reasonable for her. Her biggest anticipated challenger, Heart Nebulae, from SamIam, wanted no part of the early pace and went right to the back of the field. She would end up conceding a little over five lengths. Stuck in the middle of the field were Creepy Baker (D J C Racing Stables) and Love Appeal (Joshua Stables). They were about a length behind Various.

(Top Of Stretch, 1.5F To Go)- After running six furlongs in 1:11.05, Dirty Deeds might have seemed like this was nothing more then a workout now. She handled the turn gracefully, and pulled away from the competition, doing so by over three lengths on exit of the turn. Surely, someone was going to get up there and challenge her? It was really looking far too easy for Dirty Deeds. Various was not going to be that one. She was going the wrong way as she began to get leg weary. Creepy Baker was not making any kind of move, either. Love Appeal was running ok on the outside and advanced to second, but still had a lot of ground to be making up. Heart Nebulae only picked up a length on Dirty Deeds between the half mile and the top of the stretch.

Finish (1:48.31)- A big lead for Dirty Deeds in the stretch would secure the win for her. She made it look very easy, and a grade one win will not get more effortless then this. The field let her get away, and while Dirty Deeds did look like she was tiring late, there was no one in a position to pounce on that. By the time Heart Nebulae began her charge, Dirty Deeds had left her in the dust. Heart Nebulae did get second, edging out Love Appeal, who had a steady race, but never mounted a charge, either. Creepy Baker never got involved, and Various finished like a 1/5 favorite never should.

About The Winner: Dirty Deeds, trained by Aer Stables, and ridden by I Ortiz Jr, is a four year old filly by the late Folk Art and out of the late Sumpreme Doggy. She was bred in California by Downwind Stables as a first quarter two year old, and was acquired by Aer Stables, still as an unraced horse, in private sales for $40.000. Congratulations to the connections! The win is her eighth in 20 starts, and her fifth graded victory. Four of those, are Grade 1 wins. Her career earnings now sit at $1,574.400.
