TX Stallion Series- Zareta
LS- For Fillies Two Years Old Foaled in TX
Five Furlongs on the Dirt
June 14, 2020
The TX Stallion Series was on display Sunday evening at LS, and in the Zareta Stakes, which is for fillies, both Blue Ridge Racing and Shermfirm Stables had their chance to be in the spotlight as each brought three fillies to the starting gate. For Blue Ridge Racing, this was also a chance to win the race two years in a row, and with three entries, it was a nice and risky chance. Thanks to Nice And Risky, who won her debut two months ago at GG and seemed to be one of the top choices here for the race, it was a success as she would deliver for the trainer. The winning rider is L S Quinonez, his second such win, but first since 2011. Congratulations to them! The time of the victory was :57.85. This was only the second time the race was run at five furlongs, so we can’t compare that time to much. Let’s take a look at it!
(1/4 Mile- :22.58)- It is a quick start for three of them in particular as we go down the backstretch, and the eventual race winner, Nice And Risky, was not shy about being up front for Blue Ridge Racing. She shared that spot with her stablemate, Whiskey Bandit, who was officially a head in front of her when they hit a quarter mile. They had some company in the form of Luz International’s Down In The Gulley, who was three wide approaching the turn, but began to back off just a little bit. Luzzi Math stalked the leaders for Shermfirm Stables while L J Luzzi was right beside him with his mount, Risky Sweep, also a part of Blue Ridge Racing. It would be one more length to Debra G, from Gustafson Stable. Trailing, and running five and a half lengths behind were Live Tk, out of Night Rider Stables, and two Shermfirm Stables fillies, Get It Vb and On It Vb.
(Top Of Stretch, 1.5F To Go)- As they complete the run around the turn, two Blue Ridge fillies are looking good and going at each other pretty hard. Nice And Risky And Whiskey Bandit each seem to be in very good form at this point. Down In The Gulley was still a length behind then and running in the third lane. Luzzi Math and Risky Sweep, who had been stalking the pace, seemed to be losing a little bit of ground to them moving into the stretch and were falling into the clutches of the experienced runner, Debra G. Further back, On It Vb, positioned herself for a big run in the stretch, but still had almost five lengths to cover.
(Finish- :57.85)- Early in the stretch run, Nice And Risky put away her stablemate, and was now looking to hold off new challengers. Down In The Gulley was not going away and keeping her honest, but the push of both Debra G and On It Vb was becoming a concern for Nice And Risky. However, this filly would not back down in any way, and ran strong to the wire, picking up a hard earned win. On It VB ran well to the wire but ran out of time and has to settle for second. It was very close for third, and Down In The Gulley holds off Debra G for that spot by the slimmest of margins. Rounding out the order, it is Risky Sweep, Get It Vb, Luzzi Math, Whiskey Bandit, and Live Tk.
About The Winner- Nice And Risky, trained by Blue Ridge Stables, and ridden to victory by L S Quinonez, is a two year old filly by Sweep Nice One, and is out of Sariska. She was bred in Texas by Blue Ridge Racing as a yearling. Congratulations to the connections! She is now 2-for-2 in her career with earnings of $63.000.
