Home Spirit always puts in his run, but that run came up short in his last two efforts prior to Saturday’s $150.000 G3 Seagram Cup Stakes. As he powered through the WO stretch yesterday, he looked more like the horse that won the G2 Californian back in April. The G3 Seagram win takes his BC point total to 10 and improves his record to 17-6-1-3 with earnings of $354.050 for the Night Rider Stables runner.
Home Spirit broke well enough and was on the rail while racing five lengths off of the :23.56 pace being set by Shanghai through the opening quarter-mile of the 8.5 furlong race. He was sitting a joint-third with Detained on his outside as Combat Wombat made the decision to apply light pressure to the front-runner from Nakamura Stables.
Shanghai reached the half-mile in :47.10 while racing on a two-length lead over Combat Wombat. The eventual winner was still racing about five lengths from the front as Spankersville joined Detained on his outside. The winning-move came as Combat Wombat took over the lead after three-quarters went in 1:10.81. Behind him, Home Spirit tipped-off of the rail and D. Fukumoto made the wise decision to stay in the leader’s path instead of tipping even wider for his run. As Combat Wombat floated out to about the four path and Shanghai couldn’t keep pace, Home Spirit was able to save ground and make an inside move on the Maxmiliion Farm runner in front of him.
Home Spirit grabbed the lead just before reaching the 1/16 pole and continued to power clear from his rivals. When he hit the wire in 1:40.89, he was a length-and-a-quarter in front of Combat Wombat. Detained was able to gain the show and was followed across the wire by Remson, Angelsinheaven, Spankersville, and Shanghai.
Congratulations to Night Rider Stables and Home Spirit for their victory in the $150.000 G3 Seagram Cup Stakes!
