San Vicente Stakes (Grade 2)- $200.000 Purse
SA- For Three Year Olds
Seven Furlongs on the Dirt
January 29, 2022
In July, Wood Duck Stables picked up Demon in private sales for $150.000 after he made his first start. This has proven to be a great purchase, as the Crossing The Rubicon colt had won two out of three. After the Grade 2 San Vicente, we can make that three out of four with an impressive come from behind victory. He had looked really good in the Inaugural Stakes right before, but the betting public was not high on him, making him an 11/1 longshot, though he was among our picks. After this, we have to be very excited about his prospects for his three year old season. For Wood Duck Stables and jockey E Maldonado, it was the first win in the race for each of them! Congratulations! The time of the win was 1:21.62, the second quickest edition of the race in its history. Here’s a look at it!
(¼ MIle- :22.78)- The race begins with Storming Home taking the lead for Mb Stables with Fifty Lucky, out of D J C Racing Stables, running a length behind him in second. It’s another length to Arindel’s Sweep The Soviet, with Bronze Slayer running fourth on the rail for The Sidley Stud. Aladdins Genie is within half a length of him for Mb Stables. There’s a gap of two lengths to Levante (Threshold), and he is a length in front of the rest of the runners, who are three wide. Demon, the eventual winner from Wood Duck Stables is one of the them, running in the middle of Rogue Commando (Mb Stables) and Burnsuwhenitshot (TwinTowersRacing).
(½ Mile- :45.92)- Storming Home is still the race leader after half a mile, but Fifty Lucky has pulled closer to him and is now within half a length. Sweep The Soviet continues to stalk them in third with Bronze Slayer and Aladdins Genie running in the middle of the field. We still have the gap between these horses and the rest of the field, but it is now Demon leading the second group, as he has pulled forward a bit and completed the pass of Levante. Rogue Commando and Burnsuwhenitshot continue to trail.
(Top Of Stretch, 1.7F To Go)- Midway into the turn, Sweep The Soviet makes a big push, and with that is running three wide for the lead in almost a blink of an eye. Storming Home and Fifty Lucky are still up front as well, but looking a bit vulnerable as we enter the stretch. Aladdins Genie begins to look good, and is preparing to make it four wide as they run for the wire. Meanwhile, Demon has been making a lot of progress, now only about three lengths from the lead, but a lot closer to the rest of the field as well. Wood Duck Stables had to be very excited with how their entry was looking at this point. Bronze Slayer was still hanging with the first group, but not mounting a charge. Even Rogue Commando and Burnsuwhenitshot were moving forward, but not as quickly as Demon. Levante, however, was not showing the same spark.
(Finish- 1:21.62)- Early in the stretch, Arindel’s Sweep The Soviet was looking sharp, but it would be the one he let go getting the best of him as Demon powerfully found a gap to his inside. Meanwhile, on the outside, Aladdins Genie was looking good. As the stretch run went on, Demon was showing that he was much the best out of everyone on this day, and winning by a length and a half. Aladdins Genie gets credit for a second place dead heat with Rogue Commando, who ran well late. Sweep The Soviet has to settle for fourth, but does beat Burnsuwhenitshot, Fifty Lucky, Bronze Slayer, Storming Home, and Levante.
About The Winner- Demon, trained by Wood Duck Stables and ridden by E Maldonado, is a three year old colt by Crossing The Rubicon and is out of La Diabla. He was bred in Ontario by Arindel as a second quarter two year old, and was acquired by Wood Duck Stables in July 2021 private sale for $150.000. Congratulations to the connections! The win is his third in five starts, his second stake win and first graded win. His career earnings are now $246.440.
