Zombie Storm rallied from just off the pace to take the 16th running of the G3 Chicago Stakes on Saturday at CD. The winner, 31-12-6-5 $1,196.810, reached the wire in 1:21.80 and a head in front of the DH duo of Zero Twist and Wicked Ride. After doing the majority of her best work going a route of ground, the classy 5yo mare was able to garner the 2nd G3 win of her season and give herself another option in terms of choosing a BC division to compete in.
Sitting just off of an early three-way battle on the front end, Zombie Storm rated kindly while racing between runners and just over two lengths off of the pace. She maintained her position throughout their journey on the backstretch as the opening quarter and half were posted in :23.01 and :46.11, respectively. She was aided a bit when Not A Big Deal pushed her out another path as that runner looked for running room as they approached the end of the turn for home. That fortuitous break gave Zombie Storm clear run between horses, if she was up for the challenge.
Accelerating through the seam she found in the four-path, Zombie Storm was just a head behind leader Wicked Ride as the latter posted three-quarters in 1:09.68 from the center of the track. With 50-yards to go, Zombie Storm got her nose in front but she was in a three-way battle as a stubborn Wicked Ride wouldn’t give way and Zero Twist was breathing down her neck. In a three-horse photo, Zombie Storm got the head victory over a closing Zero Twist and resolute Wicked Ride as those two runners could not be separated at the line. Dead heating for the fourth spot were Not A Big Deal and Better In Leather. Completing the order of finish were Pink N Bold, Pink Attack, Bipolar, Ghost In The Shell, Torrents Of Spring, and Sexy Angelina.
