BC Fillies and Mares Turf (Grade 1)- $2,000.000 Purse
SA- For Fillies and Mares Three Years Old and Upward
One Mile and One Quarter on the Turf
November 4, 2023
The running of the BC Fillies and Mares Turf featured a couple of absolutely elite horses going up against others who were eager for the opportunity to give them the pain of coming up short in the BC. In such a deep field, Painville was not made one of my choices for the race, simply because of the quality of competition. The five-year-old mare had won four times previously in 2023, but three of them were in the first three months of the year. None of that mattered on Saturday, as she would prove to be the best over the ten furlongs and gave her trainer, Mo Mentum Farm, his third career BC win. It’s the first one of those wins that have come in the BC Fillies and Mares Turf, and jockey F Geroux also wins this race for the first time. Congratulations to them! The time of the victory was 1:58.15, the second quickest winning time of this race when held at SA. Let’s take a look at it!
(1/2 Mile- :46.71)- Not only does Smokey Stover’s La Terrifiant break well out of the starting gate, the accomplished veteran of sixty races is not messing around as she jumps out to a lead of about two and a half lengths, and that would have been even more if not for the presence of Raw And Real in second for Mb Stables. That one had a length over the rest of the field, herself. There are four horses behind her, and the only one to her inside is the eventual winner of the race, Mo Mentum Farm’s Painville, as that one is able to hug the rail around the opening turn. Always Condottieri runs fourth for Maletto in the third lane, while the winner’s stablemate, Mon Dieu is essentially right behind Raw And Real. Demanding Commander runs on the outside for Mb Stables, then Sinister City is next for The Freakshow, and running by herself, with Maggie Greene (The Sidley Stud) next near the rail, with Stinky Rene, our pick to win, next in line for TwinTowersRacing. Untidy (Mb Stables) is next, then Lady Hilltopper (Black N Gold Stable), Zalinda (Threshold), Toxins (London Racing), and Techfluence High (The Sidley Stud).
(3/4 Mile- 1:10.40)- Early in the backstretch, La Terrifiant is able to maintain her lead, and no one is going to question whether or not she is running too quickly early, since she knows a thing or two about winning. There’s been a change for second, though, as Always Condottieri takes that position, moving to the outside of Raw And Real, who runs third. Painville is right there with them, running on the rail being too bothered with what was going on around her. Sinister City and Mon Dieu run right behind them, and Demanding Commander still running wide. Next in line, Maggie Greene and Stinky Rene run evenly with one another, and it’s a length and a half to the rest of the field, which is still led by Untidy.
(Top of Stretch, 1.7F To Go)- By the time the backstretch run was complete, La Terrifiant’s lead began to shrink with the biggest progress being made by Painville. She was now in the second position and looked to make an even greater advance while in the turn. As we would expect from her, La Terrifiant still showed plenty of heart, but Painville was now within half a length at the top of the stretch. No one else was making that kind of progress, though, as third place Raw And Real was still a length and a half back. Maggie Greene and Mon Dieu were behind them, and then at that point the cluster of horses began to tighten up. Perhaps one of them was going to make a powerful charge but all bets would be off as to what horses that would be. Regardless, it would be quite a monumental task for a closer to snag the win at this point, and at best any such move would seem to be a third-place move.
(Finish- 1:58.15)- With a furlong to go, Painville takes over the top spot from La Terrifiant and the even better news for Mo Mentum Farm was that no one else was coming. Once this pass was complete, the race would be in the bag, allowing the trainer to soak in the final strides knowing that he had just scored his third BC win. La Terrifiant hangs on for second as Maggie Greene tries to take that spot away from her in the closing moments. Zalinda got closer as well, and that gets her a fourth-place check with in the BC isn’t a bad cut. Stinky Rene got fifth. Toxins is next, over the dead heat between Mon Dieu and Raw And Real. The rest of the order will read Lady Hilltopper, Untidy, Demanding Commander, Sinister City, Always Condottieri, and Techfluence High.
About The Winner- Painville, trained by Mo Mentum Farm, and ridden to victory by F Geroux, is a five-year-old mare by Pain, and is out of Charme Ville. She was bred in Louisiana as a first quarter two-year-old by Pain, and was acquired by Mo Mentum Farm, via Maletto in a December 2022 private sale for $150.000. Congratulations to the connections! The win is her tenth in 26 starts, her seventh stake win, and fifth graded win. Her career earnings are now $2,121.430.
