We’ve reached the final big weekend of prep races for the KYD, as three 100-point races will be held that can shake up the leaderboard as we currently know it. There will then be the “Hail Mary” next weekend in the Lexington, but this weekend will determine a lot. Here, we will head out west to SA, to take a look at the 22nd running of the Grade 1 SA Derby.

Boss Spearman Lays Down the Law in AR Derby
Earlier in the day, Daemon asserted himself as the KYD favorite with five weeks to go before the big race by winning the FL Derby. This would lead all eyes to OP, where virtual race fans looked to see if the other top contender, Extreme Jet, could also get a big win in the AR Derby.

Extreme-ly Good Field for The AR Derby
Time is winding down in the chase to get horses in to the KYD. This weekend and next figure to be the last chances for a horse to get the necessary points, although there will be “Hail Mary’s” in the Lexington. 100 point races began last week, and after seeing Gold State and Ello Santa secure massive wins, OP and GP will be the focus this weekend.

Wasted Away’s Dominance Continues with Beholder Mile Win
After her dominant three year old season that saw her win both the KYO and the BC Distaff, among others, Wasted Away returned to the race track after some well deserved time off to make her four year old racing debut. This filly by Fire N Fury had not been wasting away over the last four months and successfully took care of business in the Beholder Mile just like we are used to her doing.
Wasted Away Makes 2025 Debut in Beholder Mile
The Beholder Mile is the weekend’s lone Grade 1, taking place at SA for older females on the main track. It takes place for the 20th time this year, and for the tenth time here at SA after previously being held at HOL. The $300.000 purse has been common for the race in general, but it is a reduction from the $500.000 that we saw in 2022 and 2023.
Electric Blue Is Right at Home at SA; Wins Kilroe Mile
Electric Blue certainly loves it when he ends up at SA, and in the Kilroe Mile, he would make it a perfect 3-for-3 at this race track, with all of those wins being graded victories. Last time he was here, he won the Shoemaker Mile, a Grade 1, in May, and that was also the last time that he had won a race.
Bigchief Stables Captures SA Handicap with No More Rattle
We haven’t seen a lot of No More Rattle, as the six year old gelding was only making his sixth start since 2022, but he has made the most of the races he has been in. Coming into race off a third place run in the Hooper, he seemed like one of the top choices in the field and was the race’s post time favorite.
