VA Derby Gets Makeover This Year

This weekend is one of those few times that we will be able to look at racing at CNL, as the track hosts two big races. One of them is the $500.000 VA Derby, a race that has seen significant changes from what it has been in the past, as it is moved to the dirt for the first time.

It’s Bear Head Over Read Neck in Colonel Liam

It’s another party for Martyparty in the Colonel Liam, as the trainer picked up his second win in the race, last year using Crickets and this year bringing Bear Head. This gelding has just recently been moved to the grass, winning the Texas Turf Mile five weeks ago, and now going 2-for-2 on the surface here in the Colonel Liam.

Eight horses have made the trip to GP for the 22nd running of the Colonel Liam, and will enjoy the opportunity to cash in on the largest purse that has been offered by the race. The $215.000 exceeds the amount that was available even when the race was graded from inception through 2020.
