RACE 7 DMR Mabee Stakes (GII)
$250.000 3yo&Up F&M 1 1/8m Turf
Nice win at CD last out, taking the ET Mint Julep (GIII) by the narrowest of margins… but who’s measuring? She’s won two of four starts with a second thrown in there, so you know she can run. Has won on the west coast, loves the grass and has to be considered a big factor in this one.
Won at this distance v. black-type horses north-of-the-border last out, taking the Dancing Smart (GII) at WO. This filly has all of the tactical speed you could ever want, but don’t expect her to pass horses late – oh no, that’s not her style. It’s run and gun and see if she gets to the wire first – which she has done in five of twelve lifetime starts. She can get the job done.
Three wins in a row, four of five this year including back-to-back graded wins. She’s been doing it all at the flat mile distance, and I just don’t know how she will take the the extra furlong, especially with all of the speed in this race. She’s another that just doesn’t play catch up… but can certainly play keep-away.
She has a pair of third place finishes v. GI horses after winning three in a row to kick off the ’15 season. She was closing in both of those recent races and that could be something to look for here. If the expected speed dual materializes, she could be the one to pick up the pieces and the win.
Nice win at AP last out, getting a graded win as the odds-on favorite. She’s won half of her six ’15 starts, and her stalking style may be a nice commodity here today. I’m not tickled with the post and the jock isn’t my favorite either. Still, she’s usually around when the money is handed out.
Willie’s Green Card 4 / 2
