Fourth Straight Win for Angel Shark in San Clemente Stakes

San Clemente Stakes (Grade 2)- $200.000 Purse
DMR- For Fillies Three Years Old
One Mile on the Turf
July 20, 2019

The San Clemente was not the biggest field, but it did have one horse that seemed to look a little bit better then the others. That was Maxmillion Farm’s Angel Shark, a winner of three straight, and a horse that has been doing everything lately that her trainer has asked. She was heavily bet, but still had to show up and run her race. On this day, she would not disappoint, getting the first win in the stake for Maxmillion, as well as for her jockey, G Franco. Congratulations to them! The time of the victory was 1:33.22, tying the stake record. The complete order of finish was predicted in the preview, by the way! First time I have done that, let’s take a look!

(1/4 Mile- :23.37)- Mistique, running for Aer Stables, goes out to the lead early and has Lit Up By The French, trained by Mb Stables running behind her. Joshua Stables’ Up and Good is on the rail, towards her inside. It’s another length and a half to our eventual winner, Angel Shark, for Maxmillion Farm. Arindel’s Sierra Madre is the trailer as the field makes up generally organized line at this point.

(½ Mile- :46.79)- The second quarter is run in a similar fraction as was the first, and there is no change up at the front. The lead still belongs to Mistique, with Lit Up By The French running right behind her. Our main change at this point came from Up And Good, who simply bowed out of it early in the backstretch, and is now fourth, and five length back. She was passed by Angel Shark, who cuts a length into the gap between her and the front while still maintained a graceful stride. Sierra Madre was a little over six back.

(Top Of Stretch, 1.5F To Go)- As they begin the run around the turn, Angel Shark starts to make her move, and closes in on the two front runners. She will do this by making a three wide move, reeling them in, and pulling even at the top of the stretch. Lit Up By The French started to make her move around Mistique, but that wasn’t going to be for the lead at this point. A little further back, Up And Good’s backtrack leveled off, and now she was looking to regain some of that back. Sierra Madre continued to trail.

(Finish- 1:33.22)- In the stretch, Angel Shark does not have much difficulty clearing both Lit Up By The French and Mistique and pulls away from them with every stride. She ends up cruising to a length and a half win over Lit Up By The French, who was a little better then Mistique. Up And Good edged out Sierra Madre for fourth, but neither ever threatened for more.

About The Winner- Angel Shark, trained by Maxmillion Farm, and ridden to victory by G Franco, is a three year old filly by City Of Angels, and is out of Look Higher. She was bred in New York by Keikowin Racing as a third quarter two year old, and acquired by Maxmillion Farm in private sales for $50.000 in October 2018. The win is her fifth in eight starts, her fourth consecutive, third stake win, and second graded win. Her career earnings are now $348.060.
