A One Toys With Field in Travers

On this nice day at the Spa all 14 horses looked great as they went into the gate for the midsummer derby. The betting public decided to get behind the Kentucky Derby winner King Cobra as the 3-1 betting favorite with A One sitting just behind him at 4-1 and at 5-1 sat Crystal Pip. As the gates broke open all appeared to get out well except for Skeleton Balle who went right to the back of the pack. From the outside Macht Nights and Kelly Rycroft went for the lead. After the first quarter of a mile Kelly Rycroft had pulled away by a length over Mach Nights but was still out wide with Fumble and Devine and Broke even for third with Fumble getting a nice spot along the rail. At the half mile mark Kelly Rycroft was still on the lead but it was now a length and ¾ over Mach Nights. A One decided there was to much traffic so he moved outside and powered his way up into 3rd place and appeared to be moving very well and it looked like just a matter of time before he was going to power on by the front runners. After 6 furlongs in the race Kelly Rycroft was still on the lead but he appeared to be getting tired and A One just 1/4th of a length behind in 2nd with Mach Nights still holding onto 3rd. At just over 3 furlongs out from the wire A One moved into the lead and he was hoping he could hold that lead to the wire. With 2 furlongs to go A One was pulling away from the field and he had a length and ¾ lead over Macht Night who was tiring and fumble was just behind him. The other betting choices were back in the field with King Cobra being 5+ lengths back and not looking like he was going to move and Crystal Pip 6+ lengths off the lead looking full of run but being caught behind a wall of tired horses. It looked like it was going to be an easy run to the wire for A One in the final 2 furlongs which it ultimately ended up being. Chrystal Pip finally did find a seam but did not really hit a great stride until the last furlong when he flew up and passed fumble for 2nd. Fumble finished up 3rd in the race but today the race was all about A One. He looks to be a serious contender for the Breeders Cup Classic later this year.
