Miss The Mummy Posts Huge Upset in Forego

September 1, 2015

Three-year-olds had a chance to take on this own age group on Saturday in the Grade I Kings Bishop but a number of them aimed for the older runners in the Grade I Forego instead and Miss The Mummy proved to be the better of his rivals with the biggest upset in race history, scoring by a neck from favourite Rule The Roost. A minor stakes winners in NY-bred company, his form had tailed off all season long and he was made a 28-1 shot to win in this tough spot but overcome a wide trip and some tough rivals to score the win with a monster 102-speed rating, while earning a huge $420.000 paycheck in the process to boost his bankroll to nearly $700.000

Outside speed rocketed to command at the start of the Forego with Tophatbigcigar (30.80) breaking best over Five Star Five (10.60) and Angelic General (20.85) and as the leader was able to clear and get down to the rail, so to was Rule The Roost (*3.30) from his midpack post. Rolling through an opening split of 22.77, Tophatbigcigar was clear by a length and a half from Rule The Roost and Angelic General with Nebraskan Diademe (10.20) between rivals and Five Star Five outside and around the far turn, it looked like speed would take its toll on many of the early pacemakers. A modest half-mile in 45.80 still posed well for the leaders but just outside the quarter-mile mark, the backfield simply woke up and while Angelic General looked ready to assume command, Blame Ratman (8.45) looked dangerous on the far outside while Masterpiece Five (16.20) needed to find room along the fence. Tophatbigcigar was swallowed up by the closers and through six-furlongs in 1:09.35, there were any number of possible outcomes and while Rule The Roost looked likely to win after getting an inside run, Miss The Mummy (28.40) emerged from between rivals to swoop up and record the huge upset, winning by a neck from the favourite with a powerful Moon Landing (4.20) charging up the inside to finish third over Masterpiece Five. Angelic General and Nebraskan Diademe held well for fifth and sixth while Blame Ratman failed to quicken enough while nine-wide, with Hold The Point (34.25) and Five Star Five in midpack. Hallelujah (16.90) failed to outcome an outside draw, Ginsoaked Muse (9.10) never got involved, Gear Too (23.70) and Nefarious Leadership (11.55) wound up near the back of the pack and Tophatbigcigar faded badly to finish last, although only five-lengths from the surprise winner.

With a single top three placing in five seasonal starts, Miss The Mummy was made one of the longest shots on the board in the Grade I Forego but managed to come through an opening to score the biggest upset in race history and earn a spot in the BC Sprint starting gate. With qualification, he does not have to run in races like the Vosburgh over Phoenix, and can await his fate come November, although either of those races will help him build his credentials in a division crying out for a clear leader.

Congratulations goes out to owner Blushing Meadows and their three-year-old gelding Miss The Mummy, a come-from-behind winner of the Grade I Forego at SAR!
