The Canadian Stakes – GII
9/14/19
WO Race 3 1 1/8M – Turf
Purse $250.000
Three Year Olds and Up Fillies and Mares
A full field of twelve here for this years running of the grade two Canadian Stakes here over the Woodbine turf course. There was one scratch so the also eligible will run. A big competitive field here so let’s take a look at the field.
1. I Justwantthe Purple (28-5-7-6 $791.970), trained by Gdp Inc
The first filly in the field right here is coming into this race off of a third place finish in the grade one Beverly D at Arlington. She ran very well in that day and was beaten less than a length. If she runs that race in here she will have a very good chance.
2. No Fear (8-2-3-0 $207.590), trained by Mb Stables
The first of two for Mb Stables right here and this filly won the Wonder Where Stakes here at Woodbine last out which is the biggest three year old Canadian bred turf race for fillies. This is a jump up in class though so she will need to run a big race to win.
3. Number Nine (4-1-2-0 $150.000), trained by Spankys Barn
Another one that is coming out of the grade one Beverly D and she ran a very good second in there that day. She is very lightly raced but has ran second in two graded stakes in a row. She is improving with every race and I think she will have a good shot in here.
4. Too Much Wisdom (20-9-5-1 $813.480), trained by Mb Stables
The second runner in here for Mb Stables and she is making her second ever start on the turf. She did win the Yellow Ribbon Handicap in her first ever start on the turf so maybe she has found her best running. I think she will be ready to go in here.
5. Chais Princess (12-3-0-6 $407.260), trained by Maxmillion Farm
Scratched
6. Proud Eights (8-3-1-1 $388.200), trained by Estero Farms
And another one that is coming out of the grade one Beverly D right here. She ran a bad eleventh that day and didn’t run well at all but she ran better in the race before that which was the BEL Oaks which is a grade one. She needs to run that race in here to win.
7. Smokin Nebulae (30-6-6-6 $1,123.000), trained by Drabfantasy
And another one that is coming out of the grade one Beverly D and she ran a bad tenth that day. She got way too far back in there though and had to much to do. She usually runs a lot better when she sits up closer to the pace and she is capable of winning this is she runs big.
8. Lower Merion (13-3-2-3 $212.700), trained by Chili King Stables
This next filly is coming into this race off of a second place finish in a California bred stakes race at Del Mar. She ran good that day and was beaten less than a length. But this is a lot tougher spot and I’m not sure how she will handle this competition.
9. Prima Dona (17-4-6-3 $508.600), trained by Smokey Stover
And here we have a filly that will be making the first start of her career on turf in this spot. She is pretty accomplished on the dirt so her works must be very good on the turf. Smokey Stover is keeping her a secret with no track works so this is a very interesting entry.
10. Devil Wears Prada (57-15-9-9 $2,969.430), trained by Axeman
The old mama of this field is going to be making her fifty eighth career start. She has won multiple graded stakes and she has been everywhere and done everything. She is still running good and she is an old hard knocking mare and she always has a shot.
11. Hopewell Tradition (9-4-1-0 $706.400), trained by Team 7 Illusions
A grade one winner right here two races back when she won the BEL Oaks and she also did not run too bad when finishing fourth in the Saratoga Oaks. She is a very talented filly and I think she will have a good chance in here.
12. Flying Nun (12-4-1-2 $222.980), trained by D J C Racing Stables
Now although this filly did not run in the Beverly D she did run that same day at Arlington and she won the grade three Pucker Up easily. She went wire to wire and cruised to a win that day but it is a lot tougher ask in this race. She will have to run big.
13. Good For Nowt (13-2-2-1 $158.210), trained by Diablo Diablo
And the final filly in the field right here is coming into this race off of a bad twelfth place finish in the grade one BEL Oaks. She did not run well that day and she looks a little bit outclassed in here to me and she has a very tough post to overcome.
Summary
A very big competitive field right here and there are quite a few in here that look like they could win this race. My top pick is going to be Devil Wears Prada as she is just a very classy mare and I think she will run a big one. Good luck to all in the field.
