BC Juvenile Turf Sprint – Grade II
5 Furlongs Inner Turf Stake Purse $1,000.000 Open 2 Year Olds.
1st Kimura Mb Stables Velazquez J R
This was always going to be a close race and so much was going to come down to the trip a horse got. This one drew the rail and got a dream trip but he had to be good and in the end he just proved good enough. Stalking the leaders nothing ever really got in his way and he held the rail with ease eventually poking through to lead at the furlong pole and holding on by a fairly comfortable half length. This is win number three for the horse bought for just $8 by a stable that has some of the best breeding stock in the game, it just goes to show there are bargains out there if you are willing to bulk buy.
2nd Dawning Drei Oquinn Farm Bejarano R
This ultra consistent son of Dawning had a sticky start and struggled to find his way through but when he got clear air he flew home and was only beaten a half length in the end. 7 starts and never worse than second he has been an admirable servant to his trainer.
3rd= Grandstand Jockey Night Rider Stables Lopez P
Used the perfect draw well putting himself right in the race and sticking on gamely to share third. Strangely he went a lot slower than he did when winning over this course and distance last time but considering he started his life in maiden claimers this was a great performance.
3rd= Big City Kitty Our Athletes Ortiz I Jr
The first filly home so its fair to say she is the best female juvenile turf sprinter in the game. She showed good pace and was in the firing line the whole way and this performance considering that fillies tend to struggle against the boys at HRP may turn out to be a career defining moment.
SUMMARY
This was always going to be a close race and with only five lengths over the 14 runners at the end a lot of it came down to where the horses ended up and how they traveled. Some were lucky, some were not but none had a better trip than the winner to give Mb Stables one of his two BC winners of the day.
