One Mile and Seventy Yards on the Dirt

Silver Cobra came into the Suncoast Stakes as the most experienced runner in the field, and seemed to be on the verge of a big race as she ran over a mile for the first time. In the Suncoast, she showed why she has consistently been sent out there, earning the valuable KYO points that the race offers. If she has just wanted to keep running longer, then she will be one to watch over the next couple months. The winning trainer is Arindel, who had a good weekend in the races that I covered. It is his first win in the race, and it is jockey E Jaramillo’s first win as well. Congratulations to them! The race was won in a time of 1:39.85, which is right in line with other recent editions. Let’s look at it!

(¼ Mile- :23.64)- Nebraska Zero breaks quickly on the outside and is able to clear the field and get to the rail in time for the first time. She gets a length ahead of a group of three horses, which sees our eventual winner, Arindel’s Silver Cobra, a part of. She is a neck behind both No Telling (Nakamura Stables) and Shining Moments (RNP Stables), as they stalk the leader. There is some distance to the rest of them, about three lengths. Here is where we find both Cartwheel Dumpling (Night RIder Stables) and Maresfield (The Sidley Stud). Posterity (Mo Mentum Farm) did not break well, and trails the field, two more lengths behind.

(½ Mile- :47.37)- Early in the backstretch run, there is not much movement amongst the horses, but as they get closer to the turn, Silver Cobra begins to push forward a little bit. This allows her to take over the second position and be within a length of Nebraska Zero at the top of the turn. She was in a great striking position now! Shining Moments was hanging with her but not showing the same push. No Telling dropped a length behind these two that she has been running with. Further back, nothing was going on other than the fact that time was ticking away for them to have a shot.

(Top of Stretch, 1.5F To Go)- It certainly looked like Silver Cobra was going to make the pass for the lead in the turn, but what was not expected was the relative ease in which she did it. Midway through the turn, she had completed the pass and began to open up on Nebraska Zero. The early pace setter began to back out of it, making Shining Moments her biggest threat now. But Silver Cobra had even pulled away from that one during the end of the backstretch and throughout the turn, so right now, things were looking very good for Arindel. Maresfield was starting to show some interest, but waited too long.

(Finish- 1:39.85)- All that was left to do in the stretch was to watch Silver Cobra run, right? It looked pretty easy and that she would win the race easily but Shining Moments, towards the very end, made a valiant late push. That made the actual finish a lot closer than expected, but Silver Cobra does hold off the effort of Shining Moments to get the win. Everyone else was solidly beaten. Maresfield earns a best of the rest top three, topping No Telling, Cartwheel Dumpling, Nebraska Zero, and Posterity.

About The Winner- Silver Cobra, trained by Arindel, and ridden to victory by E Jaramillo, is a three year old filly by Fuel Injection, and is out of Cobra Crunch. She was bred in New York by Arindel as a first quarter two year old, and they have been together ever since. Congratulations to the connections! The win is just her second in 10 starts, and first stake win. Her career earnings are now $180.280.
