Canada’s Triple Crown comes to a close on Sunday in the $400.000 Breeders Stakes for Canadian-bred 3yos going a mile-and-a-half on the WO turf. While there is no TC on the line in this one, there are six quality runners who have passed through the entry box. Arindel leads the way with three of the six runners and all three look to be in with a chance. Here’s a look at the six horses who will try to capture the $400.000 Breeders Stakes:
#1 Hint Of Sugar (Arindel/S.R. Bahen): Rail horse is the only runner in the field to take part in the first two legs of this series and will be making his turf debut in here. Hasn’t run poorly in first two legs and has made quite a bit of money to only have a single win in his career. Last two starts have seen him up around the pace, but lack of turf form makes it hard to predict what we see from him.
#2 Grand Command (Team 7 Illusions/A. Beschizza): This guy is making his first turf start as well and only has two runs in his career. Won on debut at FP before running 4th in a SAR allowance. Doesn’t appear to be intimidated by this trip, but this is a big ask from a horse who is just in the infancy of his career. Not this time, but one to watch down the line.
#3 Sovereign Leader (Nakamura Stables/L. Contreras): Another lightly raced individual, he will be making just the sixth start of his career. Unlike the two to his inside, he has spent the entirety of his career on turf. Comes here off of a sharp score in an ELP allowance, but he hasn’t faced the kind of horses that are running in this. Hard to endorse for the top prize.
#4 Manchild (Arindel/G. Boulanger): The only graded winner in the field draws smack in the middle. Took a SAR G2 prior to the G1 WO Mile effort that saw him finish 11th beaten by just three lengths. May look for some pace help from his stablemates as he likes to make a run at him. Gets more ground for this and that may be well within his scope. Obvious win contender.
#5 Sinissippi Rubicon (Arindel/M. Franco): Colt hasn’t won since December and only has a maiden victory. That being said, he looks to be built for these kinds of races and hasn’t shown any distance issues thus far. Maybe the increased trip helps him stay closer to the pace without running as hard as he did earlier in the season. Betting the distance plays to his hand and give him a big shot to win this.
#6 Abominable (Mb Stables/Mar. Garcia): Outside horse is one-for-one on the WO turf as he took the $250.000 Cup And Saucer as a juvenile. Been spending time on both surfaces, but think he’s better suited for the grass. Comes here off of a 5th-place finish in G3 Saranac where he was only beaten a length for the win. Appears to be another who will appreciate the extra ground and rates strong consideration.
Final Analysis: This is more of a gut feeling than a prediction, but 5-6-4 in the $400.000 Breeders Stakes at WO. Good luck to everyone involved.
