Sunday marks the 15th running of the G3 Dowager at KEE. The $150.000 mile-and-a-half turf marathon is for fillies and mares three years-old and up carrying 121/124 lbs. Barcelona Farms (2008, 2011, 2015) has seen three runners cross the wire first in their silks while jockeys J.R. Leparoux (2009, 2010) and R.J. Albarado (2011, 2016) have booted home two winners each. Here is the field for the 2021 G3 Dowager:
#1 Ginger Shamanism (Greyfriars Stable/A. Achard 121): Three year-old gets the rail and a three pound weight break on the elders in here. Took a similar G3 back in May but has gone winless in two starts since. Enters here for the first time since July and may need one before producing her best.
#2 Lillehammer (Invicta Group Llc/R. Bejarano 124): Another that won a stake in May at this trip, but is winlessin three graded attempts since. Like the rail-runner, this lass may be best served by getting out of the gate and using her cruising speed to her advantage. Last two weren’t great efforts, but she will appreciate the drop back to this level. May not win, but feel she will be involved throughout.
#3 Catnip Crusader (Czech Out Farms/J.R. Leparoux 121): Three year-old almost ran down G3 foes last month when going 9-furlongs. Going this marathon distance, she may not need to be as far back as she was in earlier efforts. The extra three furlongs may be pushing her limits, but doesn’t appear, in any way, outclassed in this event.
#4 A Chorus Line (Asgar/C. Landeros 124): The July G3 effort is a throwout for this as that race was less than half of the ground she will be asked to cover here. The one time she went 9-furlongs, she wired PRX N3X allowance foes. Everything about her build says this trip is well within her scope and could see her being the pacesetter if no one wants the early lead. Feels live in this spot.
#5 Maya Caribe (First Street Stables/A. Beschizza 124): Four year-old takes her third crack at the 12-furlongs after a win vs ungraded foes and a seventh of nine vs G2 foes. Should find these foes more to her liking, but will need choose her instructions carefully. Think she may be the key to the race in terms of the pace scenario, but think others look a tad more appealing.
#6 Big Fajita (Rheingold Stables/G. Saez 124): Great $3.500 claim a little over a year ago has won four times since, but hasn’t been very lucky against stakes company. Only at HRP do we get a horse in a 12-furlong G3 just a month after setting the pace in a five furlong allowance. There is a scenario where we see all six ladies going forward and, if she is the “speed of the speed”, she may be tough to get by in the lane.
Final Analysis: Been wrong before, but it says here that the 4 horse hits the wire first. Good luck to all of the participants in Sunday’s G3 Dowager.
