The Barbara Fritchie… the first graded race I ever saw in real life, back many many many years ago. So maybe it was fitting that The Green Card had the $1,377.10 exacta stone cold, as D J C Racing Stables’ Distant Cousin made for a chalk winner, while 40/1 shot Key West Minibus ran up under for the nice payoff. Team Nebraska rounded out the top three, while the winner got the 7f in a snappy 1:21.96 while taking the win by a length.
The five ladies loaded perfectly and were away from the gate with Distant Cousin on the early accelerator, Good And Tough taking up the chase, Team Nebraska from the rail, Grey Wind next to that one and Key West minibus away slowest of all.
Making their way down the back-stretch on this frigid Maryland evening, Distant Cousin had the lead by a length and a half. Good And Tough not letting her get away, Grey Wind on the outside of Team Nebraska, and Key West Minibus could see them all, five lengths covering the field.
Swing around the far turn and into the lane, two furlongs to run, Distant Cousin had opened up a three length lead. Grey Wind and Good And Tough were trying to take up the chase, a gap of two to the trailing pair of Team Nebraska on the rail and Key West Minibus swinging out widest of all for the drive.
Now inside the furlong marker making their way to the finish, Distant Cousin still in front by three with a wall of four fighting it out for the minor money as the grey filly certainly looked unbeatable from here. As they made their way inside the final 150-yards and to the finish, it was all Distant Cousin for the win. Key West Minibus nosed out Team Nebraska for the place with Grey Wind a head back in fourth and Good And Tough tiring late to close this one out.
Distant Cousin is a 4yo grey filly by Iditarod Diademe – Myra, by Mordred, and she was bred by her owner, D J C Racing Stables, in New York. This was her eighth win from fifteen starts, her first start of the ’16 season, and she now has $1,430.800 in earnings.
