Nine Youngsters Ready for Lafitte at DED

Just off of I10 here in down-town Vinton, we find a field of nine 2yo’s ready to go a flat mile in the Lafitte.  I’m headed towards the outside posts for my picks and landed on Canterbury as my top selection.  Back to back wins and I think his speed could make the difference in getting to the winner’s circle.  Another with a pair of back-to-back wins is my second choice, Jump The Line.  This one likes to close from the clouds, but if he gets a clear path late, he should be right there as well.

   Coquitlam Warrior    Paradise Stable    Cotto P L Jr   120   10/1

Broke maiden at HST then was the runner-up over that surface facing state-bred stakes company.  Last out, he was fifth vs. over-night stakes company at PID so he’s obviously gotta pick it up a notch to run with this type.  Can he bounce back?

   Neds Influence    The Sidley Stud    Thornton T   120   8/1

Got the job done last out breaking maiden at CT and was second in his first strip around an oval at FP.  Looks like the type that loves a distance and certainly has shown that he likes this race-horse gig.  He may come with a price and should be watched.

   Son Of A Flirt    Lindeman Prairie    Kennedy T   120   7/1

He’s been on a steady stream of LA-bred types since he started, breaking maiden in his second start but running last of five when facing stakes company for the first time.  That’s not going to do with this group, so he needs to show more if he want to get home first in this one.

   Proud Fury    Fractious    Eikleberry R   120   9/2

Broke maiden at WO in his second start and it’s been tough sledding since that win…  he was fifth in the ELP Juv, then the vet stopped by to make a the necessary adjustment, then it was off to graded company where he’s struggled with a ninth in the Iroquois (GIII) and a sixth in the Nashua (GIII) at AQU last out.  This looks to be a bit softer, so maybe it’s a spot where he can get back into form.

Got the job done on the FE grass, breaking maiden in that one, showing some real heart.  He was setting the pace, was headed, then fought back to win by two.  You gotta love when a horse shows that they want to win.  He was second on the main track, closing fast, so I wouldn’t worry about the surface.

This was gets my attention and may be the one to get past…  Broke maiden at LS then was second at SAR taking on NY-bred stakes company on a damp strip.  He was ninth in the Breeders Futurity (GI) in his most recent, but was only three lengths back, and this group is softer than that one.

He hasn’t run a bad race… second in his first start at WO at the abbreviated distance, then broke maiden at PID before winning an Alw race at PRX in his most recent, both of those at a mile.  He shows speed and seems to carry it for a route so he could be the one.

Another with back to back wins as he took down NY-bred maidens at FL then won an Alw race on a wet PID surface, both of those with big closing moves.  Distance certainly doesn’t appear to be an issue for this guy and if he keeps going the way he’s been, he could be a huge factor.

Broke maiden at FL after a couple of less-than-thrilling starts prior.  Perhaps the added distance helped, or maybe the field was just a bit softer.  He’s going to need his best to be in the hunt today.
