The GP Sprint Championship – Grade III
GP Race #7 6 1/2f Dirt Graded Stake
Purse $100.000 For Four Year Olds And Upward.
1 Sweep The Event, trained by D J C racing Stables
The sprint division is probably the most competitive racing at HRP and not least beacuse
each race seems almost like a seperate lottery. With sprint trips the draw, the break, the
trip all play a major part and as such it s really tough to pick a winner. This five year
olds record is a good example of this having placed a close third in a grade one event and then
finishing last in a grade two in his very next race. Money finishes in The Crosby and the
Vosburgh prove he is up to running a big race here but his inconsistency doesnt make him a
sure fire betting proposition so that may be a good enough reason to pass him over. His
seasonal reappearence in the SSM Turf Sprint was very nice and his works are as good as ever
so he must be somewhere near the front if he has a good day.
2 Super Sexy Sanny, trained by Downwind Stables
This evergreen seven year old showed his well being with a strong seasonal debut win at SUN proving
that he had lost nothing since his close fifth in the BC Turf Sprint. He has finished in front of
Sweep The Event a few times and is far more consistent so i would have a bettr time of backing him
for this competitive sprint. His works are as good as ever and with older horses seemingly holding
their sprint form pretty well i expect a bug run from this veteran.
3 Break Fast, trained by Eastern Equine
This four year old has been very lightly raced with only three races as a three year old. He showed
some ability in that short campaign winning a competitive overnight on his third and last appearence
of the season and his works suggest there has been some improvement in the last 12 months. His seasonal
debut in The Forego was solid enough and whilst he doesnt have the form lines of some of the others i
wouldnt be writing off his chances.
4 Five Star Five, trained by Harrell Racing
This five year old foud a new lease of life when taken back from routing and sent sprinting. A good win
in last seasons SSP Handicap and a one length ninth in The Forego both achieving triple digit speed
figures put him right up there with the best sprinters and a pacey seasonal debut win at GP shows him
to be right on his game at five years old. His win ratio’s arent too hot though and in a competitive race
like this you have to look at all angles so whilst i expect a strong effort i just cant see him winning.
5 Silver Swillie, trained by Ekli Stables
A solid enough sprinter but he may find a few of these just too classy.
6 Baffle, trained by Nj Vets
Another that typifies the lottery type nature of these sprint races he won the Grade one Crosby last year
and didnt hit the money again in four subsequent races. Its easy to give him a big chance on that Crosby win
but everything else he did last season was pretty average so once again you have to roll the dice if you put
your money down on this one.
7 B N Ravishes, trained by Tiratzo
This highly consistent five year old has only missed the board once in all of his races and that includes
plenty of black type races. He has changed hands a bit recently going from Australia Wide to Pan Farms and onto
Tiratzo in the space of two races. The reason for those sales worry me but this is a speedy five year old who
rarely runs a bad race so in a scratchy contest he may be a safe outside bet.
8 Mars, trained by Grimley
This is a very interesting entry. A TC contender last year he ran a cracker in the KYD to be third and then ran
creditably in The Preakness and The BEL. He continued to run well in routes for the rest of the year but looked
a bit jaded after a very tough season. The break wouldve done him the world of good and his works suggest he has some
speed to go with his stamina. Add all those facts to the strange thing that extreme changes in trip or surface can
bring some out of this world performances and you could easily see this one as the winner.
9 Power And Money, trained by BigKing
Fairly lightly raced he was tried on the TC trail but failed at the first hurdle in the Wood Memorial and was
taken straight back to sprinting. He had a few good runs but didnt show enough and with a horrible draw today
it is hard to see him winning.
10 TS Ten, trained by NightRider Stables
Another veteran who has been around the block a few times he remains a tough sort but it is hard to see him
having the ammunition to win today.
11 Owen Wolff, trained by Wolfs Den
A horror draw makes it tough for this lightly raced four year old but he is a consistent sort and is sure to
be in the race for a while. An on the pace horse he will appreciate the wide speed push so it just remains
to be seen how long he can last in the lead.
SUMMARY
A horrible race to try and predict i think Super Sexy Sanny may just have enough to win this. B N Ravishes may well get a place
and i expect a big run from Mars.
