The final weekend of January will have plenty of exciting races, and that will include at OP where 10 points for the KYO are ready to be handed out to the winner of the 12th running of The Martha Washington. It’s an ungraded stake, but has all of the prestige of anything that is graded. The race started small, only offering a $50.000 purse, but in 2021, it would run for $200.000 for the first time, and it is great to see that purse returning again. That race last year was won by Intercontinental, for Fractious. It would be her last race for the trainer, as he would sell her off for $700.000 to Smokey Stover. Given that price, the filly may have underachieved, and has since been sent to shed. In 2022, we will have ten going to the gate. Let’s look at them!

#1- Canadian Flight (Mb Stables, ridden by C J Hernandez)- Starting on the rail, this Raid Of The Mist filly won on debut and while she has not won since, she has done well in finishing third in ungraded stakes. That is something she has accomplished four times, including the $200.000 Muskoka for Canadians. Worked earlier today (Tuesday) at AQU and the time may not jump out of you, but she was much better at a mile earlier in the month,

#2- Lassitude (TwinTowersRacing, ridden by J R Velazquez)- Like Canadian Flight, Lassitude has only one win to her credit right now, coming in her second start which was in May. Off of that, she has run in nothing but stakes and would run third in the Grade 1 Frizette. That would get her to the BC Juvenile Fillies, where she was one spot away from collecting a check. Knocking on the door of a big win, and it could come here. I will be very interested to see how she starts this race, because she has run some very different styles thus far.

#3- Low Budget Java (Nakamura Stables, ridden by V R Carrasco)- The trainer and jockey pair up again, and it will be interesting to see if they continue to do so with such regularity with the expected jockey updates. Low Budget Java should like Carrasco’s early style, as she likes getting out to the lead. She won the $250.000 Princess Elizabeth Stakes with that style, one of two wins in her three career starts.

#4- Woo Doggie (Jive Inc., ridden by E Jaramillo)- A very consistent horse in her seven career starts, never failing to hit the board. But she does not only do that, she wins races, doing so four times. On New Year’s Day, she went long for the first time, and was second in the $100.000 Cash Run. That’s the type of race that she has been in for much of her career.

#5- Bahrain (Waldo, ridden by D Moran)- In five career starts, this filly has also been able to win often, with three trips to the winner’s circle. We haven’t seen her out there since Thanksgiving weekend, when she scored a win in the Grade 3 Mazarine BC Stakes in a tight photo against Low Budget Java. In the race, she came from well off the pace to catch that rival as that one used her front running style. There will be slightly less ground to cover here in the rematch.

#6- Exactly (Fractious, ridden by S X Bridgmohan)- On New Year’s Eve, Fractious picked this filly up from Chili King Stables in private sales for $300.000. With that trainer, she was very effective, mostly running in NY-bred races. She’s won two of them, but none of them were any of the stakes she tried. She still ran very well in those races though, finishing in a second place dead heat with Lassitude in the Seeking The Ante.

#7- Kiss Me Back Foot (Night Rider Stables, ridden by M Franco)- We are still early enough in the season to where a maiden winning a race like this would not be out of the question, but it’s hard to get excited about Kiss Me Back Foot here. She only has four public works, so we’ll see what she has here.

#8- Peppermint Angel (Ace Racing Stable, ridden by E T Baird)- Oquinn Farm may have let this one get away, putting her in a $20.000 claimer, which she would get a win. Ace Racing Stable picked her up and took their time with her, running her for the first time on the last day of December. In the LA Futurity- Fillies, she would extend her winning streak to three. That’s a six furlong race, and we have yet to see her run more than six and a half. This filly keeps stepping up, so that may happen again.

#9- Cmonyalll (Arindel, ridden by T J Pereira)- Picked up in private sales for $300.000 in July after just one career start. The filly would break her maiden in DMR, going wire to wire. She tried a similar style in the race that followed but fizzled in the stretch in the $100.000 Soviet Problem Stakes. So, we still have to see her at her best at this level, but her works suggest that she is very capable.

#10- Out In Space (Crocker Ggs, ridden by T Gaffalione)- She won’t have to start from space, but this filly will have to deal with the outside post. In five career starts, she has won twice, and will be looking to pick up her first stake win here. So far, she has only made one start at this level, and was okay but not great in the Untapable. Working very well, so I expect her to be a threat here just as long as she can handle the post without any issues.
