CA-bred stakes action for 4yo-and-up fillies and mares going 6-furlongs with $100.000 on the line in Monday’s Spring Fever Stakes. The Spring Fever has drawn a field of five sprinters and race high weight Secrether will have to give her four rivals four pounds on the scales. All five of the runners have made a start in 2022, so there should be no excuses as they continue their seasons in the Spring Fever. Here’s a look at the field:
#1 Secrether (Ekli Stable/M.E. Smith 127): 5yo is carrying the four extra pounds due to her G3 victory back in May of ’21. Made an ok start to her 5yo season but will need to run much better (considering the impost) if she plans on besting these. Going in her favor is the fact that of her 11-wins, eight have come in 6-furlong races; in fact, she’s won 8 of 9 races at six panels and seven in a row. While she may love the trip, she won’t love toting the weight and 127 just feels too much to best this group.
#2 Uzume (Nakamura Stables/Ru. Gonzalez 123): Mare made a winning ’22 bow and totes a modest two-race winning streak into this. Unlike the rail-horse, this 5yo has yet to conquer six furlongs and this race may be leading to a longer trip. She’s as classy as anyone in the field, and, if the trip isn’t too short, she should be right there when the money’s on the line. Latest work says she’s still moving forward, so keep your eyes peeled down the road.
#3 Sexy Angelina (Night Rider Stables/J.R. Velazquez 123): Another who made a winning ’22 debut, this lightly raced 4yo appears to have a ton of upside. Sports three wins from just seven starts and has legit excuses for both of her poor efforts. She looks like she will play a role in setting the tempo and looks strong enough to see this trip all the way through. Looks to stand a big chance.
#4 Charley Trance (Asgar/A. Cedillo 123): Filly has made twelve consecutive turf starts coming into this. Now those turf starts have yielded very positive returns, but her one dirt race was a decided cut below. Does sport an impressive 5f move prepping for this and the trainer makes a placement error. The trip and surface are question marks but feels like she runs big here.
#5 Fioraia Ruler (Avenue Z/E. Maldonado 123): Filly was third in a similar spot to close out her sophomore season at GG and started ’22 with a 3rd at SA in a listed race. Still only has the maiden-breaking win, but she has talent. Got no favors with this outside draw, but she may just try to drop to the rear and try to gun them down late anyway. May not pass them all, but she’ll challenge for the minors.
Final Analysis: 4-3-2 in the Spring Fever at SA. Good luck everyone!
