Saturday’s $500.000 G1 Kilroe Mile may have proved as a passing of the torch moment as Ptyrannical delivered an impressive half-length victory over Kid Commander and Iron Nation. Ptyrannical adds the G1 Kilroe Mile to a resume that already included a G2 victory in his sophomore finale and now sports a 18-6-2-2 record with earnings of $703.480.
Ptyrannical, breaking from stall three, got away in good order and was in the inside of the third flight as Yankee Stadium dictated the pace early on. Not much changed for Ptyrannical as he was 7th and about five lengths off of the :23.19 opening quarter set by Yankee Stadium. His positioning was unchanged as Gran Z moved up just a bit to apply token pressure as Yankee Stadium completed the first half-mile in :46.27.
As Gran Z tipped-off of the rail to fully engage Yankee Stadium on the turn, Ptyrannical was rewarded for his patience and ground-saving trip. He went from 7th to 3rd through the turn and appeared locked-and-loaded as Yankee Stadium reached the top of the lane after three-quarters went in 1:09.26. Yankee Stadium finally relented the lead inside the sixteenth pole as Ptyrannical surged to the front. A length behind him, a battle for the minor placings ensued as four horses were lined-up across the track in paths 3 (Yankee Stadium), 4 (Kid Commander), 5 (Gran Z), and 9 (Iron Nation), respectively. Iron Nation and Kid Commander would get within a half-length of Ptyrannical at the wire, but they would have to settle for a DH-2nd. Gran Z would finish another half-length back in 4th with The Grandmaster, Yankee Stadium, Cold Weather Rider, Immoral, King Que Niagra, Sunlander, Roodey, and Cherokee Surprise completing the order of finish.
Ptyrannical (Opus Force o/o Star Pirate) is a 4yo gelding owned by Arindel, bred by Joshua Stables, and ridden to victory by T.J. Pereira. Congratulations to all of the connections on their victory in the G1 Kilroe Mile.
