The SUN Oaks was held for the 11th time, and while it is not a 100-point KYO prep, the 50 points that offers will be enough to get the winner into the big race just as long as the trainer wants them there. Mb Stables entered two into the race, one seeming to have a much better chance than the other one would have. It would be that horse, Flying Ridge, that stepped up and got the job done as she wisely stalked the early leaders and flew by them in the stretch for the win. In total, Mb Stables earned 90 points in the two KYO preps this weekend with Main Flirt in the FG Oaks, and now Flying Ridge here. It gives him three horses in the top eight. By the way, of the other five, they’re owned by Arindel and Smokey Stover. It’s certainly big stable heavy on top of this leaderboard right now. For Mb, it is his third win in the race, having also won in 2017 and 2019. Jockey E Jaramillo is a two time winner now, having previously won in 2020. Congratulations to them! The winning race time of 1:42.27 was not as quick as recent editions, but all that was needed. Let’s take a look!
(1/4 Mile- :23.55)- Smokey Stover’s The Magic Box is the quickest out of the gate, and she will get out to an uncontested lead of about two lengths while running around the first turn. Running second is Say Bye Bye, from Arindel, who also broke well but would not challenge The Magic Box for the lead. Our eventual winner, Mb Stables- trained Flying Ridge runs in third, sitting comfortably on the rail with the leader directly in front of her. Sticky Contact runs within a length of her, running along her outside, for Fractious. Killeen (First Flight Stable), Greta (Royalty Stables) and Angelic (D J C Racing Stables) come next, with the maiden, Miss Bounty (Mb Stables) and Low Budget Java (Nakamura Stables) at the back.
(½ Mile- :47.24)- There isn’t really anything new to report over the backstretch trip, just horses running in the same, or similar spots that they were in before, and no one making a move or dropping back. The most interesting horse to watch at this point was actually Low Budget Java, as she shifted to the inside, outside, and back inside again.
(Top Of Stretch, 1.5F To Go)- The Magic Box is the race leader throughout the turn, and she tries to hang on to the lead as the pressure increases from behind. Both Flying Ridge and Say Bye Bye inch closer and closer over the second half of the turn with the two of them seeming to match one another’s stride. Flying Ridge is right to the outside of The Magic Box now, and only behind by a neck. Her biggest challenge would likely by Say Bye Bye, since she, too, was running well. Sticky Content could not be forgotten about, either, as she was within two lengths, and then it’s four wide a length behind her. Everyone, except maybe Low Budget Java, still seemed to have a shot into the stretch.
(Finish- 1:42.27)- With many horses still in striking range, Flying Ridge needed to be great in the stretch, and she would have a little more kick in her stride, especially in the early portions of it. That would help her get ahead of Say Bye Bye by half a length, and that is an advantage that she would never relinquish. As others ran well, they were still not going to catch Flying Ridge, who gets the win! Say Bye Bye takes second, over two who dead heat for third: The Magic Box and Angelic. Greta, Killeen, and Sticky Content were next, and the final two are the maiden Miss Bounty, and the post-time favorite, Low Budget Java.
About The Winner- Flying Ridge, trained by Mb Stables and ridden to victory by E Jaramillo, is a three year old filly by Apples To Oranges and is out of Diluted. She was bred in New York as a second quarter two year old by her trainer, and they have been together throughout! Congratulations to the connections! The win is her third in seven starts, and it is her first stake win. Her career earnings are now $275.560.
