Tactics Win the Day in NM Breeders Oaks

NM Breeders Oaks
1 1/16 Mile Dirt Stake Purse $250.000 Filly 3 Year Olds Foaled In NM.

1st    Dauphin Island Dog       Smokey Stover        Ferrer J C

Some trainers enter a cheap allowance winner into a stakes race and they finish last by five but this trainer seems to manage it with more success than most. After making all in similar splits she just held on to her allowance win last out on the same track, today she settled near the back and came with a steady run to win a shade more comfortably by half length. And therein lay the answer to why this trainer is having the success they are. Instructions instruction instructions, it should be a new TV programe but joking aside whether it is instructions, pure luck or some other magic trick Smokey Stover is making this game look easy. Buying the filly from Jive Inc for a very fair price after being beaten in a couple of optional Allowances she looks to be developing nicely and one would expect a graded stakes run next.

2nd     Our Last Night     Mb Stables      Hernandez C J

Somewhat apt that the trainer that is Smokey Stovers biggest rival should finish second with another front runner that tried different tactics today. Also bought from Jive this filly was on a roll after being switched to a very much on speed filly who burned them off early. Today however she settled a little more off the pace than usual and could not quicken as well as the winner. A different instruction and who knows might happen if they meet again.

3rd      Kalthoff Repeater     Spankys Barn      Van Dyke D

Was on speed to win a sprint on this track last time but today became a deep closer coming from last to run an encouraging third less than a length off the win. Claimed for just ten dollars she looks to be a great find for the stable and once they have a handle on her she should be able to prevail in this sort of race.

4th      Woo Doggie         Fractious       Velazquez J R

Well it looked a lot like the old days as this one ended up in front only to weaken late and fill the final paying spot. I think she has a lot of natural speed and may be better over a sprint trip but of course she may stay a mile and a half with different instructions too. But failing the miracle of instructions i think she has a nice enough future in sub mile races.
