Did We Just See the Next How To The Hound in SUN Derby?

SUN Derby – Grade III [KYD]
1 1/8 Mile Dirt Stake Purse $500.000 Open 3 Year Olds.

1st      Individuation       Mb Stables        Franco M

25% of the top twenty in the TC qualifying are horses owned by this stable and to be honest that is pretty much business as usual for the champion trainer who has largely been untouchable in recent years.
This son of Jung, bred by the under rated Patterson Stables was bought for $300 at the end of the year and after being gelded quickly added a win to his record in a GP Allowance. Taking a big step up in grade he took on the Rebel last time and showed plenty of class when running on late past everyone but the winner to take second. That was one of the best form lines for this race even though the horse that beat him was a filly, she maybe just the best filly and three year old in the game at the moment though.
Mb Stables needed some favors in running but with three runners in the field one of them had to get some good fortune and this well drawn gelding managed to find his way from mid pack to the front inside the final furlong and put them away like they were standing still. I have no idea how fast he covered that final furlong but i hand timed him at eleven and a half seconds which is pretty amazing after a mile of running.
He moves on to the KYD and lets not forget what last years winner Howl To The Hound did after winning this race.

2nd       Ey Mon          Arindel         Saez L

Ran a similar pace off the front that saw him win his maiden but had no answer when the winner swept by at the furlong marker. It was good to see him allowed to run his natural race and he was brave enough to hold onto second. A home bred who is still on the learning curve it will be interesting to see what he does next time.

3rd     Distorted Reasoning      Dawson Farms       Ferrer J C

The Risen Star winner was really dealt a poor hand by the draw monster and had to do a lot of work to get up into an early stalk. He naturally ran out of puff down the stretch but this wasn’t a bad effort from a rotten position and his trainer would not be disappointed. A decent draw come the KYD and he will be a contender.

4th      Paco      D J C Racing Stables       Davis D

Ran a great fourth but in doing so lost money again for his owner. He really does deserve a good win after his tenth race in a row in stakes class and this was n improved effort. Maybe he will get one more chance in a 50 pointer.
