Winchester Takes The Cartier In Tight Finish

5/15/22

  5  WO     The Cartier (GIII)

$150.000    4yo&Up    6f   Dirt      122lbs +penalties

Another Sunday Stakes, another swing and a miss for my handicapping as Winchester found the fast WO oval to his liking and returned to form, winning The Cartier (GIII) by a length, getting the six furlongs in a quick 1:083.  It was his first win since taking the Forego (GI) at SAR last summer.  Buck stepped up in a big way to take the second spot by a head over post time favorite Ginger Clean, then another neck to Stand In Line getting the minor money, only three lengths from front to back in this one.

Winchester is a 5yo bay gelding by Sydney Harbour – Empress Of Olympus, by Mt Olympus, and he was bred in Cal by Orion Farms.  John Henry acquired this one three races back for $200.000 via private purchase and it appears those wet surfaces were not to his liking.  He now has six wins from twenty-three starts and earnings of $1,018.710, this being his first win of the season.  Congrats to the connections!

Winchester tracked the pace, split horses at the furlong marker, clear late.  Buck taken well off of the pace, began to move forward in the far turn and fanned widest of all into the lane, closed full of run.  Ginger Clean broke alertly, set pressured pace 2p, 3p into the lane, headed at the furlong marker, continued on well.  Stand In Line trailed to the top of the lane, good late effort.  Elusive Star raced mid-pack, cut the corner along the rail, no response.  Asset Angel force the pace to the sixteenth pole, tired.  Barbary Appeal was not a factor.  La Grange was outrun.
