To say Drink Me Pretty and Miss Steel Mazula are a pair of evenly matched older mares may be just a bit of an understatement. For the 2nd time in less than nine months, Drink Me Pretty and Miss Steel Mazula dead-heated for the win in a graded stake. Completing The Allaire Distaff Stakes-G3 in 1:48.66, the winning duo was a length clear of Speedy Ginger.
The race started like a match race as Drink Me Pretty and Miss Steel Mazula offered no quarter crossing under the wire for the first time; however, as they raced through the turn, Miss Steel Mazula ceded the lead to her rival, and, by the time they completed the first bend, it was Forever Phooey Party racing neck-and-neck with Drink Me Pretty. While Drink Me Pretty posted the opening half-mile in :47.17, Miss Steel Mazula dropped some three lengths off of the pace as she raced along the inner rail.
As she reached the midway point on the final bend, Drink Me Pretty had gotten away from the field and held a two-length advantage while posting three-quarters in 1:10.88. Miss Steel Mazula was traveling nicely along the inside about three lengths off of her rival, but she was just beginning to show some renewed interest. She was the nearest competitor to Drink Me Pretty as that filly led them into the stretch on a three-length advantage and looked to be cruising. Miss Steel Mazula had less than two-lengths to make up by the time Drink Me Pretty posted a mile in 1:35.58. Drink Me Pretty stayed glued to the rail as Miss Steel Mazula drifted-out while erasing her deficit.
The lead was a length when they reached the sixteenth pole, but Miss Steel Mazula was trying to take one last crack at her rival. In a head-bobbing finish, it appeared Drink Me Pretty had lasted down on the rail; however, after closer examination by the stewards, Miss Steel Mazula was determined to have gotten on even terms and both mares would have to settle for 40% of the $150.000 purse. Speedy Ginger closed to be within a length in a clear third and was followed across the wire by Starship Twister, Chance In Graceland, and Forever Phooey Party.
Drink Me Pretty has now banked $2,387.760 with seven wins from twenty-six starts. Miss Steel Mazula has now banked $1,224.170 with nine wins from twenty-one starts. Incredibly they have now dead-heated twice and continue to show incredible wills to win. Congratulations to Drink Me Pretty/Mb Stables and Miss Steel Mazula/Nakamura Stables on their shared victory in The Allaire Distaff Stakes-G3 at PIM.
