2 WO ONT Damsel Stakes

A very small field of four sophomore fillies will be headed postward on Sunday as we look at the entrants for the ONT Damsel Stakes, going a mile and a sixteenth on the main track at WO. I’m going to take Poison Candy as the top pick, despite the fact that she’s still looking for her first win of the year, and only has a maiden win to her credit. Runner-up efforts in the AZ Oaks and the SA Oaks (GII) along with a fourth in the Black Eyed Susan (GII) is enough to get my attention. Let’s give Strawberry Latte a chance as well, showing two wins from her last three starts.

She’s still looking for her first win of the ’22 season but her last three races have been over this track, so she knows her way around this oval. She was fourth beaten five vs. similar, in her most recent, so maybe she has a chance here.

Another look for her first seasonal win, but was third vs similar here last out, and she was only beaten a length. If she runs back to SA Oaks (GII) race, where she was the runner-up, she could be the one to get past.

She changed hands prior to that last-out third vs. similar here at WO, but that was on soggy turf. She’s done most of her damage on the green stuff, so it will be interesting to see how she runs back on the main track.

Two wins from her last three starts, including a nice Alw win at DMR at today’s distance. If she can repeat that, this could be her race for the taking. Either way, I think she’s a horse that you have to watch.
