CC Canterbury ($150.000 Purse)
CD- For Three Year Olds and Upward
Five and a Half Furlongs on the Turf
November 12, 2022
Coming into the CC Canterbury, One Man Show was hot, winning three of his last five as he and trainer Spankys Barn hope to rediscover the form that was able to get the gelding into the BC Turf Sprint back in 2020. That will take more than just winning this race, but it could serve as another step forward to getting back there. One Man Show was our pick in the preview, and was solidly bet by the virtual CD faithful as the second choice. He would use his typical style of jumping out to the lead and going wire to wire en route to getting his trainer his first win in the race. Jockey T Gaffalione is a first time winner as well. Congratulations to them! The race was won in a time of 1:03.19. This is the first time the race was run at this distance, so we can’t compare that to past editions. We did have a late scratch in this race, as Son Of Sandston was pulled, allowing Mojica Racing’s Halos Image to get into the field. Let’s take a look at how it went down!
(1/4 Mile- :22.66)- Out front early, it is our eventual winner, Spankys Barn’s One Man Show, and he lives up to his name with an uncontested early lead. Behind him, a couple of classic rows of four are evenly created. The stalker group has You Know Youre Right on the rail for Mo Mentum Farm with stablemate McGill beside him. In the third lane, we have Lunar Watch, for Black N Gold Stable, and Check Matie on the outside for Bigchief Stables. The next row, from inside to outside, is Nuclear Zak (D J C Racing Stables), Phooeys Quest (Threshold), Wintry Mix (La Canada Racehorses), and Cacciadivoli Bay (Asgar). Behind them, the field is more lined up with Cincinnati (Our Athletes) and Golden Authority (Asgar). Trailing are Albaquirky (Santan Stables), Halos Image (Mojica Racing), and Mount Cook (Aandc Stable).
(½ Mile- :45.41, Top Of Stretch, 1.7F To Go)- One Man Show looks comfortable with the lead, handling the turn well and still holding a length and a half advantage over his closest rivals. You Know Youre Right and Lunar Watch have emerged as the top two horses from the stalker group of four and are a length ahead of both McGill and Check Matie now. Those two are joined by Cacciadivoli Bay, who is running very well on the outside. Nuclear Zak, Phooeys Quest, and Wintry Mix are all in the middle of the field and running out of time. Everyone else was already out of it.
(Finish- 1:03.19)- No one was beating One Man Show today, as he would not even be challenged in the stretch. He made this look very easy, actually, and wins by nearly two lengths. Lunar Watch slipped by You Know Youre Right and then held off Cacciadivoli Bay late to get the second spot. Cacciadivoli Bay is third, over You Know Youre Right, who struggled in the later moments of the race. There was a lot of shuffling around for positions behind these four, but despite that movement, none of it would factor for purse paying spot. The final running order is Wintry Mix, Albaquirky, McGill, Check Matie, Nuclear Zak, Phooeys Quest, Golden Authority, Cincinnati, Halos Image, and Mount Cook.
About The Winner- One Man Show, trained by Spankys Barn and ridden to victory by T Gaffalione, is a five year old gelding by Crystal Maze, and is out of Big Bad Goof. He was bred by TwinTowersRacing as a yearling in New York, and was acquired by Spankys Barn, via Maxmillion Farm, in a February 2022 private sale for $20.000. Congratulations to the connections! The win is his ninth in 29 starts and his fourth stake win. His career earnings are now $850.710.
