Woodford Turf Classic – Grade I
CD Race #10 1 1/8m Turf Graded Stake
Purse $500.000 For Four Year Olds And Upward.
1 March Madness, trained by la Rosa Stables
This grand old warrior has been racing in top turf company for a long time
now. Third in the BC Mile in 2013 and the winner of The Cliffhanger last
season he always runs his heart out but struggles to win at this level. I
reckon he is as good as ever and will run his usual honest race but i just
see him as a place chance today.
2 Antelope Storm, trained by Grimley
This five year old has won eight races but is another that struggles at times
in this class. A brave winner of the Mumm Handicap last time with a light
weight he is in career best form so is worth a look in what looks a weak
grade one field.
3 Snow Tap, trained by Australia Wide
The ex champion trainer looks to have got this five year old on song and in a
weak grade one has a better chance than he should have. He dead heated for the
The Danger Hour last time which shouldnt be good enough at this level but he has
been working well and this trip may just suit him at the first time of asking.
4 Spotted Cat, trained by Blushing meadows
I have always admired this little pocket rocket and he looks like he may have
found a very nice chance to add a second grade one to his record. He was huge
in the HOL Derby last year winning by five lengths but has been looked after
since and has only raced twice since then. His seasonal debut came in an open
allowance at GP where he won nicely and then he ran on well to be beaten just
a length in third in the MM Mile. I think this may be the answer in this contest.
5 Heart Pocket Jeans, trained by Deja Vu Farm
I wouldnt have looked at this horse twice in February but he ran a decent race in
the Appleton last time beaten just a nose and he may be just the improving type
to win this race. His turf works have been very strong and he comes from a trainer
who does well with a small string.
6 Midway, trained by Whitewater Stables
Lightly raced with only seven starts he is clearly and above average as he proved
when taking the grade two Arcadia last time out. Since winning his maiden by nine
lengths at the end of last year he has raced three times in graded company winning
two and placing second in the other. A strong worker this is the first time he has
tackled this sort of trip but he certainly has the ability to overcome it.
7 Tin Lizzie, trained by Stald Gullis
The winner of the grade one Read Stakes last year he also took The City Of Hope Mile
before running a great sixth in the BC Mile. He has looked as good as ever this year
winning the Kilroe Mile before running on late in the MM Mile last time. This draw will
probably mean he will be taken to the trail today but with a small field he may be able
to finish right over the top of them.
SUMMARY
A disappointing field for this $500 race but three of them stand out in any field. Midway,
Tin Lizzie and Spotted Cat should fight out the finish and i will be cheering for Spotted
Cat to come out on top.
