In one of the better turf performances I have see Desolation Island finishes strong against a tough field to win the American Turf Stakes by 2 lengths. Early pace setter Laffin Chino looked solid on the lead for the first ¾ of a mile but those early fractions set up the race for some hard charging closers. The closers were Desolation Island, Southern Time, and You Big Freak. Desolation Island came from the furthest back and overcame a shakey ride from the jock to blow by the other closers and pace setter. Southern time ran on well to hold off You Big Freak for a solid second place finish. I spoke with owner MB Stables after the race and he said that he believed that Desolation Island is the best 3 year old turf horse he has ever had, and is pointing him toward the Pen Mile with the next start. Here is how the race and payouts broke down.
