San Marcos Stakes – Grade 3
SA – 1 ¼ Mile – Turf
For Four Year Olds and Upward
February 5, 2023
1 Spankersville (The Sidley Stud) Won the 1 ½ mile TAA Stakes (Grade 2) last out on dirt. In fact, this five-year-old hasn’t run on turf since April when he finished fourth in the $100.000 Dangers Hour. Working well on turf and clearly the distance is no problem.
2 Valvano (Royalty Stables) Won in optional claimer company last out. Only his second career start on turf, both in the money. Has never run beyond a mile, so distance is a question. Another one working well. We’ll see if that translates to the track.
3 Lantern Yard (Avenue Z) In the money in graded company but hasn’t gotten to the winner’s circle at this level yet. Went 1 ½ mile two starts back and scored a 100 SRF in a second-place effort. This could be the one that gets him that elusive win.
4 Simply Magic (Winning Link Stables) Just a maiden win in eleven tries for this four-year-old gelding. He did finish second by a nose in the Grade 2 Hill Prince, but it will take a big effort to get a piece of this purse.
5 Atomic Eclipse (Spankys Barn) Six-year-old hasn’t been able to hit the board in graded company lately. Did win a $75.000 claimer last out, but he’s another one that needs a big effort.
6 Last Way To The Beac (Maxmillion Farm) Grade 1 sinner of the AP Million in August. Has struggled since then in graded company, but I wouldn’t count him out. Could have a say in the outcome.
