The Rebel (Grade 2) (KYD)- $1,000.000 Purse
OP- For Three Year Olds
One Mile and One Sixteenth on the Dirt
February 25, 2023
Time is getting closer to the KYD, and predictions are being made as to who we feel might be in the race. On the other hand, we are still far enough away from the big race for a new name to enter the discussion that had not been talked about before. Energizer Party was still a maiden when he ran at GP last month and finally scored that win and he was not about to let the rain-soaked track at OP keep him from returning to the winner’s circle. He would run a similar race as he did down in Florida and while he had to work harder to get the win, the fifty points for the win were all his! Energizer Party is trained by Mb Stables, who has had a stranglehold on this race with now his fifth Rebel win. L Saez was aboard and won for the second time. Congratulations go out to them! They splashed away to a winning race time in the slop of 1:47.19. Let’s take a look at it!
(1/4 Mile- :23.67)- Chameleon and Indian Summer, for Rock Creek and Diablo Diablo respectively jump out to the early lead and run side by side around the opening turn and into the backstretch with very little separating them. Dominant, trained by Wood Duck Stables, showed some early intentions of running with them three wide before settling into a stalking position right behind them. Neon Town, out of Broken Spoke Stables, ran fourth and was the only other one at this point looking to stalk the leaders. Our eventual winner, Energizer Party, maintained a nice position on the track for Mb Stables on the rail, and about three lengths from the lead, but ahead of a four wide group right behind him. From inside to outside, that was Jokers Wild (D J C Racing Stables), Jedi Order (Delta Farms), Douwe Egbers (First Flight Stable), and Peaceful State (Smokey Stover). Behind them, at the back, are Apache Rise Again (Apache Warrior) and Silent Murder (Mb Stables).
(1/2 Mile- :48.20)- As the field moves down the backstretch, the post-time favorite Indian Summer is able to put some distance between he and Chameleon and now leads that rival by a full length. Nothing is wrong with Chameleon, as he also maintains a strong stride while running on the rail. Dominant, meanwhile, is looking a little leg weary in the backstretch and seems to be headed for the back at this stage. Neon Town slid by into third but had not really made a move on the top two as of yet. To accommodate Dominant, Energizer Party would need to move off the rail, but that would eventually give L Saez good options for a lane choice within the turn. There’s about a length and a half back the rest of the pack, which are led by Douwe Egberts, but as of now, there are notable moves coming from back there.
(Top of Stretch, 1.8F To Go)- Indian Summer looks strong in front, making our pre-race pick seem strong. His advantage was approaching two lengths, and as a horse that has gone wire to wire in the past, you had to like his chances. Neon Town is now second, moving by Chameleon as now that one is unable to maintain the same pace. Energizer Party is fourth, and L Saez opts for three wide move as to not get hindered by Chameleon. He was handling the turn well but would have a lot of work to do to catch up with Indian Summer, who was still running well. Further back, Douwe Egberts still led the rest of the pack. Silent Murder was poised to take a lane to the outside of him and Apache Rise Again had a lot of clear track in front of him to pounce on if he was able to.
(Finish- 1:47.19)- Indian Summer seemed to be in control in the stretch, as with a furlong to go, it didn’t seem like anyone was catching up to him fast enough. On the outside, Energizer Party kept on fighting all the way to wire and ends up competing the pass in the closing moments to win by a half-length. Indian Summer was second, narrowly over the hard closing Apache Rise Again. That one was simply flying in the stretch, something to keep in mind that next time he shows up in one these races. Neon Town was nearby in fourth, two lengths ahead of fifth place Silent Murder. Rounding it out, it’s Douwe Egberts, Peaceful State, Chameleon, Jokers Wild, Dominant, and Jedi Order.
About The Winner- Energizer Party, trained by Mb Stables and ridden to victory by L Saez, is a three-year-old gelding by King Party and is out of Energizer Bunny. He was bred as a yearling in Florida by Martyparty and was acquired by Mb Stables, via Maxmillion Farm, when he was still unraced in a February 2022 private sale for $35.000. Congratulations to the connections! The win is his second in six starts, and his first stake win. His career earnings are now $656.180.
