Silver Jazzmin Holds Off the Storm in The Hurricane Bertie

The Hurricane Bertie (Grade 3)- $125.000 Purse
GP- For Fillies and Mares Four Years Old and Upward
Six and a Half Furlongs on the Dirt
March 11, 2023

There were not a lot of people who believed that Silver Jazzmin would get the job done in the Hurricane Bertie, as she was made a 19/1 longshot in the field. We can’t say that we were any different, as she was not among our picks for the race. She had been running well coming into the race, with two wins in four starts, but it simply seemed as though others in the field had more going for them in terms of the competition they had been running against. Proving that you never can tell what to expect, Silver Jazzmin would indeed take care of business as a wire-to-wire winner for trainer The Sidley Stud. It is the first win in this race for both him and the jockey, J R Leparoux. Congratulations to them! The race was won in a time of 1:15.50, which is not one of the quicker times though was all that was necessary. Here’s a look at it!

(1/4 Mile- :22.34)- Out of the gate, we have two horses looking to set the early pace for the event. One of them is our eventual winner, The Sidley Stud’s Silver Jazzmin. Keeping her company right to her outside is Spanish Style, who is trained by Asgar. These two are clearly the best in the early moments down the backstretch as they pull out to a two-length advantage over the rest of the field. We don’t have a clear third place horse as of yet, as four of them battle it out for that position. With a nose in front, Christina G, from Mb Stables, lays claim to that spot for now, narrowly over Running Hot and Wicked Ride. They are trained by First Flight Stable and High Voltage respectively, the two trainers who just had a close finish between them in the prior race, the Captiva Island. Lady Narloff is nearby for TwinTowersRacing and on the rail Angelos Stable’s Dialing is next. A half of a length behind them, La Belle Province (Night Rider Stables) and Lady Sammyantha (The Sidley Stud) are side by side. Further back are the trailers, Spearmint Rhino (Arindel) and Longclaws Maggie (Big Jd Racing).

(1/2 Mile- :45.55, Top of Stretch, 1.7F To Go)- Silver Jazzmin continues to run well at the front and is able to pull away from Spanish Style more so because that one is no longer able to keep up. The next challenger for our pacesetter to deal with is the one we did pick to win the race, Christina G. At this point, she seemed to be in a good position and was within half a length. For now, Spanish Style was still third but had Dialing about to go by her inside imminently. Wicked Ride and Running Hot were next in the middle of the field but neither had shown interest in making a push forward yet. Next could come Lady Sammyantha, Lady Narloff, and La Belle Province, but the one to watch would be Longclaws Maggie. From the back, she had swung out wide and seemed to have plenty of energy saved up for the stretch. Spearmint Rhino had a clear lane in the middle of the field to utilize if she was able.

(Finish- 1:15.50)- At the top of the stretch, Silver Jazzmin puts away Christina G and makes it look easy. Dialing was inching closer with every stride and had a length and a half to make up. Approaching the wire, Silver Jazzmin tried to hang on, but things would suddenly get a lot closer in the dying moments than it seemed like it would. Dialing had put forth a valiant effort, and Christina G, seemingly put away earlier, was gritty on the outside. With a full head of steam on the far outside, Longclaws Maggie was flying. She couldn’t possibly pull this off, could she? For The Sidley Stud, the race ends just in time as Silver Jazzmin does indeed hang on for the win, in a three-way photo. Dialing is second, getting the headbob on Longclaws Maggie while Christina G was within a half-length of them. Spearmint Rhino came on for fifth, beating Lady Sammyantha, Running Hot, Wicked Ride, La Belle Province, Spanish Style, and Lady Narloff.

About the Winner- Silver Jazzmin, trained by The Sidley Stud, and ridden to victory by J R Leparoux, is a six-year-old mare by Silver Slayer, and is out of the late Jazzmin, she was bred in West Virginia by The Sidley Stud as a first quarter two-year-old, and they have been together throughout! Congratulations to the connections! The win is her eleventh in 35 starts, her fifth stake win and second graded win. Her career earnings are now $463.920.
