5 GP The Hutcheson Stakes
$100.000 3yo 6f Dirt 122lbs +penalties
We head down to GP for The Hutcheson Stakes, a six-furlong sprint for the sophomores and this is a wide-open race. I’m taking Flat Cup as the top choice off of that Alw win at FG in his most recent. I know, I know, his last three races have come on the weeds, and this is a main track sprint, but he did show speed on the dirt in his first two starts and I think it carries over there. Another that deserves a big look is Heavy Impulse. He was third in the Limehouse and was moving forward late in the Swale Stakes (GIII), both of those here… and I think the home cookin’ keeps him part of the story. I don’t think the wet track is his friend, so keep that in mind.
Here’s The Field –
Back-to-back wins breaking maiden at FL and taking down Alw types at PRX, then was third in the Linehouse and closed a late gap to be sixth in the Swale (GIII) on a wet track, both of those here at GP. He comes back to the 6f distance and is a horse that certainly deserves a look with this group.
Claimed, gelded and broke maiden at FG on the weeds… so far so good. Obviously, this is a step up in class and he comes back to the main track, but I think he’s a nice horse and they know what they have here, and he is going to come with some odds, so it’s a win/win if you are on his bandwagon.
Got back to the winner’s circle last out, taking down OptAlw types over this track, sprinting on the main track. He broke maiden at DMR, so he certainly has run with some big horses. He was last of ten at CD in the Brown, his only stakes effort, but maybe this is more to his liking.
Broke maiden at KEE and won a stakes at GG, thus adding the two-pound impost, but has been up the track in both the RP Springboard Mile, where he tired to be sixth, then a last of eight effort vs. OptAlw types over this track in him most recent trip to the gate. He has to turn it around.
Claimed for $25.000, won two for the new connections and then sold to the new barn, and they go right after the gusto, headed into this one. Those wins were vs. WV-bred types, so the step-up in class is obvious, but he did look good in both of those wins, so maybe he just keeps on going.
Broke maiden at WO on a wet track, but his three dry track efforts leave a bit to be desired. He’s shown good speed in his last two trips to the gate, but tired vs. Alw foes here, then again in the El Camino at GG. He needs to hold it together late if he want to be part of this one.
Things were going well as he broke maiden at AQU then was third in the Street Sense (GIII) at CD, but he was sixth in the Remsen (GII), sixth in the Jerome and eighth in the Davis Stakes (GIII), all tiring efforts. Can he find some of that old magic and make noise with this group?
Broke maiden at AQU and was tagged for the $40.000, and after a bad Alw race at KEE, he’s been tough in his last two starts. Third in the Pulpit on the grass here, and then won vs. Alw types at FG, again on the weeds.
No bad races since the vet stopped by after that debut at MNR. He broke maiden at HOU and just missed in the Grasmick at FON, so this is an obvious step up in class, but he’s been running well of late. Another like that HOU win would certainly make him a threat.
