Ruby Stakes (Grade 3) (KYD)- $700.000 Purse
TP- For Three Year Olds
One Mile and One Eighth on the Dirt
March 25, 2023
Coming into the Ruby Stakes, Arindel already boasted one of the horses that many feel is a top KYD contender, but with his barn being as powerful as it is, just one entry into the race will not be enough. Now, he will have at least two entries into the race as Sinamaulu captured the Ruby Stakes, earning the 100 points and showing that he is yet another great horse produced by Hanamaulu. At first, it looked like that broodmare may send another foal, Forceamalu to the KYD as that one did race in the BC Juvenile, but his development has stalled (based on being dropped into an optional claimer last week while having 9 KYD points) while Sinamaulu’s continues to rise. For Arindel, this win on the muddy going is his first in the Ruby Stables, and that is also true for jockey J C Ferrer. Congratulations to them! The time of the win in the mud was 1:51.96. Let’s take a look at it!
(1/2 Mile- :48.04)- Censored has plenty of energy in the early going as the Mb Stables entry jumps out to the early lead and opens up while going around the first turn by about a length and a half. He would have a group of four stalkers down the front stretch, with our eventual winner of the race, Arindel’s Sinamaulu, being one of them. He’ll hold the inside lane while going around the turn, and right beside him is The Alchemist, for Nakamura Stables. The outside pair of this group of four opted to back off a little and position themselves behind the inside pair, at least for a little while. However, Brother Bear, trained by Rampage Stable, seemed to have a change heart and would begin to push forward again just prior to the run down the backstretch and would go three wide with Sinamaulu and The Alchemist. Duke Of Satire was more than happy to tuck in behind a familiar face, his stablemate, The Alchemist. Mamba started in the middle of the field for Mb Stables and would move to the inside of Duke Of Satire for the backstretch. Looking further back, it was a length and a half to Bahamut (Ashwood Farms), then Martinez (Royalty Stables). A half length behind him would be Details Matter (Alydar Stables), Vince The Prince (Riggins Racing), and Nygard (South Shore Stables). Trailing is Tough Customer (Mb Stables).
(3/4 Mile- 1:13.14)- We make our way down the backstretch with Censored continuing to hold an uncontested lead. Only one of the stalkers is able to keep up with him, and that was Sinamaulu. The problem for Censored was that Sinamaulu was showing that he could do more than just keep up, and as they reached the top of the final turn, jockey J C Ferrer would look to move his horse off the rail to position him well to make the pass within the turn. Brother Bear was still third and certainly not out of it, but he was outrun by Sinamaulu in the backstretch and would need to work hard to get back around him. The Alchemist was still to his inside, but not looking as strong. Duke Of Satire and Mamba also lost a little ground to the leader, but still were positioned well in front of the rest of the pack. For now, we were not seeing one of those other horses looming as a major threat to close from behind.
(Top of Stretch, 1.7F To Go)- Within the turn, it was beginning to look like we were going to have a two-horse race as both Censored and Sinamaulu were clearly the class of the field. Censored handled the turn really well and would maintain his full-length lead as he reached the top of the stretch, showing his rival that he was certainly not going to be going anywhere. Sinamaulu stayed right with him, however, and a great stretch battle would be in the works. These two had put away the rest of the field, opening up by around three lengths, giving their trainers piece of mind that one of them was going to get 100 points today, and the other 50. Brother Bear was still the best of the rest, holding an edge over The Alchemist, Duke Of Satire, and Mamba. Along the rail, a great lane opened up for Martinez, and trainer Royalty Stables had to be thrilled to see his horse take advantage of it. The race for third was certainly wide open between several for them, and the third place KYD points are valuable as well.
(Finish- 1:51.96)- In the stretch, Censored did all he could, but with just a little under a furlong to go, Sinamaulu would make his move, and complete the pass for the lead. Now with a head in front, all he would have to do is maintain his stride to earn his way into the KYD. He would do so, scoring his 100 points, and showing that Arindel has more than just Gorogue Laga sitting in his barn as a strong contender to get that victory. Censored gets 50 points, putting his name in the hat for Mb Stables to be one of his three entries. Behind them, the race for third was pretty intense and with 30 points on the line for 3rd, that too could get a horse into the KYD. They would be about five or six barn, in the stretch fighting for that position, but the inside lane that Martinez was very beneficial as he could maintain his stride and get that position, narrowly over Vince The Prince. 20 points for that one isn’t bad, either. Mamba takes fifth, and there are points for that as well, but in the barn, he is in, maybe the trainer needed to see a little more. Duke Of Satire just misses out on points in sixth, rounding it out, we have Tough Customer, Brother Bear, Details Matter, The Alchemist, Nygard, and Bahamut.
About The Winner- Sinamaulu, trained by Arindel and ridden to victory by J C Ferrer, is a three-year-old gelding by Sinissippi Rubicon, and is out of Hanamaulu. He was bred in Ontario by Arindel as a third quarter two-year-old, and they have been together throughout. Congratulations to the connections! The win is his third in seven starts, and his first stake win of any time. His career earnings improve to $522.700.
