2 SA Providencia Stakes (GIII)
$100.000 3yoF 1 1/8m Turf 122lbs +penalties
SoCal and The Big Track are the spot, and we look at the field for the Providencia Stakes (GIII), going the classic mile and an eighth on the lush lawn, here at SA. I’m taking Diamond Pearls as the top selection in this one, as I just think that FG stakes score makes her the one to beat today. She was second in the Jessamine (GII) and fifth on BC Day, both at KEE, so class is obviously not a problem. Dress Warrior is another that won a stakes last out, so let’s give her the second spot on the ticket. She was seventh in that Jessamine (GII) race and was third over this surface and at the distance, while facing OptAlw types. It looks like a nice bunch, so grab a cold snack and let’s get to the rail.
Here’s The Field –
Sold in Feb on the private market and made her first start for the new barn a solid one, running second over this track in the China Doll. That was her first start in ~90 days, so she could improve off of that one, and if she does, she could be a handful today.
First or second in five of seven starts, and you always have to fear the big barn in these types of races… and by that, I mean the ones with horses in them. I think you have to give her a big look today, as she seems like a horse that is sitting on a big effort.
She’s won two of her last three and has only been off the board in one start, so there’s no doubt she knows how to run. This is her first swing at stakes company, but she’s doing everything right, so why not?
Another that’s won two of her last three starts and that victory in the Sanibel Island at GP certainly makes her a horse to be reckoned with today. I like the way she goes and looks like a horse that could be any type. I’d pay attention to her in this race.
Certainly, a classy type, winning the Surfer Girl (GIII) over this track as a 2yo, and has been second in her last two starts, Alw races at GP. She likes the surface and seems ready to run a big race. I think you have to use her on your tickets, if you want to cash them in.
Another that comes into this one off of a stakes victory, as she won the Lacombe Mem at FG, getting up on the wire against a nice bunch of horses. That race may be enough to make me think she’s the one to beat today, as well.
Broke maiden at TUP last out, and they jump into the deep end of the pool, going right after graded types. She was purchased for just $3.520 at the Dec 22 Auction and has been close in both starts since the barn change. Still, this is going to be salty.
Broke maiden at DMR vs Cal-bred types and has been up the track since. Eighth in the Natalma (GI) then last of ten in an Alw race on the downhill course, here. She’s going to need to find some old magic if she wants to be part of this one.
