The Audubon ($225.000 Purse)
CD- For Three Year Olds
One Mile and One Eighth on the Turf
June 3, 2023
Since being moved to the grass, Regulatory had been running a lot better, and seemed like he would be one of the top choices for the race. He was our second choice, and we were looking forward to an entertaining rematch between he and Details Matter. Only one of them would show up, and that would be the Mb Stables- trained entry that went off at unexpectedly high odds of 10/1. There would be only one horse in the field that was bet less, but that would not matter on this stay as this three-year-old Tactical gelding edged out another 10/1 longshot, Five Shot Party, to get the win. It ends up being the first win in the race for both Mb Stables, and the jockey, A Beschizza. Congratulations to them! The time of the win was 1:45.91. Let’s take a look at it!
(1/2 Mile- :47.11)- Out of the starting gate, we would have two horses breaking well that would end up being the top two finishers of the race. Five Shot Party, trained by Maxmillion Farm, would be the early leader after half a mile. Regulatory, trained by Mb Stables, is not going to let him get away from him, and is just half a length behind them while being in the third lane. Running between these two is one that we were expecting better from, Details Matter, for Alydar Stables. It’s a length and a half to the fourth place Nevada Lee (Nakamura Stables), with a similar distance to Island Boy (Arindel). At the back of the field, Watership Down (Lazy Eye) and Sinning Black (Night Mare Racing) run together.
(3/4 Mile- 1:10.58)- Five Shot Party continues to be the race leader down the backstretch and into the turn. Regulatory is second and is still within a length of him. For now, Details Matter is right there with the top two, only a length or so back. The distances to Nevada Lee and Island Boy are about what they were before, and we had not seen anything out of Watership Down or Sinning Black as of yet.
(Top of Stretch, 1.8F To Go)- Rounding the turn, Five Shot Party is still running out front and he still has Regulatory running to his outside, and within a length. So, essentially, we had run the whole race with these two on the lead and it still seemed as though they were on good form entering the stretch. The question now would be whether or not there would be any new challengers. Post-time favorite Details Matter was still close enough to them, running third, but had not shown an interest in challenging for the lead. Nevada Lee was inching closer a little bit, but the same could not be said for Island Boy. The two trailers were still back there, and if one of them was saving something, the time for that over!
(Finish- 1:45.91)- Into the stretch, Five Shot Party was still the leader, but he had not been able to put away Regulatory. Now, as we got closer to the wire, we began to see Regulatory gaining ground on him just enough to give himself a shot. Others in the field were closing in, but if there was going to be another contender here, it was not going to be either Details Matter or Nevada Lee. Coming on strong from behind was Sinning Black while on the far outside. He had a lot of work to do still, but F Geroux was determined to get there. Approaching the wire, however, it was all about the two who had been on the lead all day, and Regulatory continued to gain just enough ground to make it a very tight photo at the wire. On examination, it would be him getting the head bob over Five Shot Party to get the win in the Audubon. Sinning Black gets third, ahead of Nevada Lee, Watership Down, Details Matter, and Island Boy.
About The Winner- Regulatory, trained by Mb Stables and ridden to victory by A Beschizza, is a three-year-old gelding by Tactical, and is out of Forever Blue. He was bred in New York as a first quarter two-year-old by Mb Stables, the only trainer for which he has ever known. Congratulations to the connections! The win is his third in eleven starts and first stake win of any type. His career earnings are now $238.320.
