The Salvator Mile – Grade III
1 Mile Dirt Stake Purse $150.00 Open 3 Year Olds And Up.

Well, this race was always going to go to a horse that pulled a performance out of its hind quarters and this one certainly did that coming back to the mile after a long-time sprinting to take the race by a neck.
Ridden from the back either by design, race engine or AI he drove home like the good horse he is and didn’t seem to mind the step back up in trip. His last win came in a little ungraded sprint race at RIL which just goes to show how difficult it can be to weigh up form these days, but he had shown ability in the past and he certainly showed it today.

With all the stakes form in this race we saw a sprinter win and a horse that only has small glimmers of stakes form take second. This one either chose the right tactic or it was chosen for him but either way he went to the lead on a good pace and nearly pulled off the win. He has been over a variety of trips and surfaces in the last 12 months, so maybe this is his best trip, but I don’t think anything is as obvious as that at HRP. A great effort in a race where he looked out classed after showing some improved form and works, I hope this is the start of something good for the five-year-old.

Whilst the winner flew home from a fair way back this one did an equal job coming from even further back to gain third. I have a feeling this six-year-old has found a new lease of life, but his running style does rely on factors outside of the trainer’s control so whilst there may well be a good race in him, I am not sure when that will come.

Well, with all the route stakes form beaten, this was the best of them, and he could only manage fourth. This again shows just how hard it is to win with a natural closer although he was much nearer early on than usual that only seemed to blunt his finishing speed. He may be one to look at in those marathon races in the future.
