“Shining” Group Goes to the Post for DEL Hcp

We head out to the beautiful Oaks again and take a look at the field for the DEL Hcp (GII) and mile and three-sixteenths main track stakes for the ladies, and we have a nice group of seven set to go to the starting gate for this one.  Let’s go to the outside post and give Shining Moments the edge today.  She looked great winning the Apple Blossom at OP, and just missed last out flying home late to be third in the Phipps (GI) where she faced (beat) a few of these.  Let’s go right next door and put Brienne The Snake in the middle of things.  She’s won her last two, including the Santa Margarita (GII), so there’s no doubt that she can run well.

 ’23 has not been kind to this one as she will looks for her first win of the season.  She was third in the Davaona Dale (GII) at GP back in Mar, but most of the starts have been trailing efforts.  She needs to wake up in a big way to run with these.

   Laffy Crack    Night Rider Stables    Husbands P   118   7/1

Another looking for her first win of the season, but she has been horseflesh in a number of graded races.  The best of those was a runner up finish in the La Troienne (GI) at CD, and she could be a horse that will like the added distance.

   Third Gear    Smokey Stover    Rose J   119   8/1

Two wins this year, both at the Alw level, and she only beat one in the Phillips, last out.  She won some big races last year, so she has done it vs. this type of horseflesh, but she needs to find some of that old magic if she plans on bringing home a check today.

   Present Tense    Mb Stables    Van Dyke D   119   7/2

She won the Ruffian (GII) at BEL and closed well last out to be fourth in the aforementioned Phipps (GI) at BEL.  The big barn always comes with horses that are on their toes, and this one could be a tough nut today.

Has been on the board in eight of fifteen starts, two of those wins, but it’s been at the Alw level, and she’s missed the board in both ’23 starts.  This is a big step up and I think they’d be happy with anything close to a check.

Kept the hot hand going taking the Santa Margarita (GII) at SA last out.  2/1/1 from five starts and the other was a fast closing fourth vs. stakes company, so I think she may be getting better and could be the one to beat today.

   Shining Moments    RNP Stables    Bejarano R   122   3/1

A win and two thirds from four seasonal starts, and the win came in the Apple Blossom Hcp (GI) at OP.  Off-the-pace is her game, and with only four in this race, traffic shouldn’t be an issue.  Look for her to be flying home late and bringing home a big chunk on this one.
