Fast & Classy Spells the Group for Caress at SAR

7/22/2023

  7   SAR   Caress (GIII)

     $200.000      4yo&Up F&M      5 1/2f Turf       123lbs

We head up to the Spa and catch a nice field of female turf sprinters, set to go five and a half furlongs in the Caress (GIII).  I’m headed out to the far outside and will give Lady Of Lord the nod today.  I think her speed and the outside post set the stage for her doing her normal dirty work carry it as far as she can, and I think that’s to the winner’s circle.

Great Beneficiary is another that has been running tough and was third to the top pick in the Intercontinental (GIII), so she certainly warrants a big look today.  She won a nice stakes at CD prior to that race, and at today’s distance, so she’s a contender.

Ewa Beach is just pure class, was second in that Intercontinental (GIII) race, and she must be considered every single time they put her in the gate.  Class, speed, cash… she has it all.  Don’t leave her off your tickets.

Here’s The Field –

1
Secret Waterfall    Wood Duck Stables    Garcia Mar   123   8/1

She never runs a bad race and looked good getting her first win of the season taking down the Power By Far on the soggy Philly vs. PA-bred types.  But she’s also been close vs open types, running second (DH) in the Frankle (GIII), again on the wet SA sod… she’s run well on all surfaces, so watch her… she could have some value.

2
Point Of Honor    High Voltage    Hernandez R M   123   6/1

If you throw that License Fee race out, she’s been tough as nails of late… eleven wins in twenty-seven lifetime starts tells you that she’s a runner.  She loves the grass, loves to sprint and you have to give her a shot here.

3
Charlotte de Shark    Aarons Hosses    Hernandez C J   123   7/1

Another that was close vs open and graded foes yet go the win at SA facing Cal-Breds in the Valentine on firm sod, last out.  She fits the same MO, just missing in the Yellow Ribbon (GII), etc., and could be a big factor today, with her best work.

4
   All By Myself    TwinTowersRacing   3Ortiz J L   123   7/1

No wins this season, but a second and three thirds from her five starts, and even that fifth last out in the Just A Game (GI) was only a length back finish… yeah, she’s knocking and just missing.  If she can get just that one little -umph- she could upset this group.

5
Omnibus    High Voltage    Van Dyke D   123   5/2

Third in the fore mentioned Just A Game (GI) and won the Wilshire (GIII) at SA prior to that… add in a second and another third, all at SA vs. graded types, and downhill to be the horse to get past today.  This is a horse to watch as we march toward the BC.

6
Trippi Sprinkle    Mb Stables    Prat F   123   4/1

Two wins this season including a nice run in the Monrovia (GIII) at SA on the downhill then she was second in the Sidney at CD before a bounce in the Chicken Fried at LS.  She’s an off-the pace type at the sprint distances, so if she gets a clear late run, look out.

7
   Ewa Beach    The American    Castellano J J   123   4/1

The ol’ gray mare can still run with any types…  she won the Giants Causeway at KEE, then was third in the Sydney and second in the Intercontinental (GIII) last out.  Fourteen lifetime wins tells your… she knows how to bring home the money.

8
   Inquisition    Arindel   Davis D   123   8/1

Two wins in ’23, the biggest was the Gallorette (GIII) at PIM on PRK day… she ran out of gas last out in the Just A Game (GI) after setting the early pace, so we have to see if she can turn the tables today.

9
Great Beneficiary    Smokey Stover    Cohen D   123   4/1

Both of her seasonal wins were at the stakes level, taking the Menard Memorial at FG, then taking the Sidney at CD, where she beat a few of these in that sod sprint stakes.  Obviously, she can run with any type and has to be given a big look today.

10
My Girl Makita    Smokey Stover    Elliott S   123   5/2

Closed like a freight train to get the win in the Royal North (GII) up north of the border and did the same when she took the Wishing Well at SA.  Thirteen lifetime wins for this mare, so there is no doubt that she’s a bad ass.  Can she add to that bankroll today?

11
   Marner    Mb Stables    Bocachica A   123   6/1

No wins this year, but she’s been close in three of five starts, including a near miss in the License Fee at BEL.  She was in the BC F&M Turf (GI) last year, so the sprint game could still be a bit new to her, but I think you have to give her a look.

12
Lady Of Lord    Our Athletes    Ortiz I Jr   123   7/2

Back-to-back wins coming into this one, and she sure looks like a force to be reckoned with, that’s for sure.  She beat some of these in the License Fee and came right back to wire the Intercontinental (GIII) again, beating some of these.  She has a 13/6/3 line from thirty-two starts, and just runs her eyeballs out every single start.  I like her.
