Beverly D (Grade 1) (BC)- $500.000 Purse
CNL- For Fillies and Mares Three Years Old and Upward
One Mile and Three Sixteenths on the Turf
August 12, 2023
Virtual racing can be very unpredictable, can’t it? Coming into the Beverly D, there would have been no reason to make Stinky Rene you’re pick to win. She would go off as a 26/1 longshot and was not picked much in the pick ’em. Most that did probably just did so because of her 50/1 morning line odds. She had not hit the board in any of her races this year and was going up an excellent group here. Somehow, Stinky Rene not only reversed her run of form to win but did so in a convincing fashion. For this, you really have to tip your cap to trainer TwinTowersRacing, who stuck with her, and ate a lot of money in nomination fees only to come up empty. Now, his filly by Rene is heading to the BC Fillies and Mares Turf in a little under three months. Congratulations to the trainer on this win, which is his first in the race! That’s also true for jockey R M Hernandez. Time of the win was 1:51.98, which can’t be compared to anything since this is the only edition of the Beverly D to be run at CNL. Let’s take a look at it!
(1/2 Mile- :46.76)- Tabitha Stephens breaks well out of the gate for Mb Stables, and shows the way down the frontstretch the first time and while rounding the turn. Her lead is three lengths, and it is her stablemate who holds down the second spot as Demanding Commander leads the post-time favorite, La Terrifiant from Smokey Stover, by a neck. Our eventual winner, TwinTowersRacing’s Stinky Rene is next, and she runs directly behind Demanding Commander, while Catawba does the same for Sccj Stables. It’s three more lengths to the trailers, Stellar Agent (Night Rider Stables) and Bombing For Peace (Jerry Garcia Racing).
(3/4 Mile- 1:10.40)- As we complete the backstretch, most of the horses in the field are content to maintain their positions in the running order. Tabitha Stephens still holds that three-length cushion over Demanding Commander and La Terrifiant, and Stinky Rene remains a length behind those two. However, for some reason, Catawba began looking very lethargic and began dropping back quickly. Let us hope this can be attributed to something like meters and not anything else. Stellar Agent and Bombing For Peace two-length still at the back.
(Top of Stretch, 1.5F To Go)- Around the turn, Tabitha Stephens continues to be the leader, and seems to be running well enough to possibly hang on all the way to the finish. However, on exit of the turn, Stinky Rene began to find that Red Carpet Handicap form from last November and closed in on the leader. She had always seemed to have a good lane on the track and now pushed to the outside of Demanding Commander to make this bid. Demanding Commander and La Terrifiant each still kept a consistent stride, but this was not going to be good enough any longer. Stellar Agent and Bombing For Peace were each making a bid from behind, with the former looking like the strongest of the two. Catawba was done for the day.
(Finish- 1:51.98)- With a little under a furlong to go, Stinky Rene took over the top spot, surprising many in the process. Meanwhile, TwinTowersRacing could smile over the gap that she was opening up on the rest of the field. Yes, Stellar Agent was running well behind her, but she was never going to get close enough to pass her. In the end, Stinky Rene gets the win, coming with a two-length margin. Everyone will wonder now, what is next for this one? Is this going to be a one-off for her, or is she beginning a hot streak which will carry over into the BC? Time will tell, and for now TwinTowersRacing will celebrate this win. Stinky Rene grabs second, with Tabitha Stephens hanging on over La Terrifiant for third. Admittedly, La Terrifiant didn’t look like herself today, but everyone’s entitled to this type of race on occasion. Demanding Commander was next, then Bombing For Peace, who was another confusing no-show today. It was way back to Catawba, with a result you have to be concerned about but hopefully the trainer can figure out why this happened and move on.
About The Winner- Stinky Rene, trained by TwinTowersRacing and ridden to victory by R M Hernandez, is a four-year-old filly by Rene and is out of Skunked. She was bred in Florida by TwinTowersRacing as a yearling, and they have been together through all the ups and downs. Congratulations to the connections! The win is her fourth in 23 starts, and her second stake win, each of which are graded. Her career earnings are now $631.97.
