Miss Grillo (Grade 2)- $200.000 Purse
AQU- For Fillies Two Years Old
One Mile and One Sixteenth on the Inner Turf
October 1, 2023
It’s not unprecedented at all for maidens to win stake races, and when it happens it tends to be in two-year-old races like the Miss Grillo. However, Schrodinger Con did not seem to be the type of filly that could pull it off. Well, we were certainly wrong about that! At least we were not alone, as the filly went off at odds of 31/1, setting off some big prices to be paid to those who believed in her. Now, Schrodinger Con knows that she will BC bound after edging out fellow longshot National Dreamer at the wire. The filly is trained by Big Guns Stables, and along for the ride was F Prat. For each, it is their first win in the Miss Grillo. Congratulations to them! The time of the race was 1:40.62, which really can’t be compared to anything since up until last year, the race was held at BEL, and last year’s race was on a soft surface. Let’s take a look at it!
(1/4 Mile- :23.28)- Could we live without Baby Come Back being on the lead early? Probably, but that’s where the Nakamura Stables filly is down the frontstretch, holding a length lead over Bottomless Mimosas, who runs in the silks of Mb Stables. Tucked in right behind these two is where we find our eventual winner, Schrodinger Con, for Big Guns Stables. She’s a full length ahead of the Alydar Stables- trained Between Memories, and Diablo Diablo’s The Wire, who we had picked to win the race. Heavenly Body (TwinTowersRacing) is next in line, then it’s a length to National Dreamer (First Flight Stable) and Tea Time (Mb Stables). Next come Pride Cometh (Mo Mentum Farm) and Once Freed (Riggins Racing), and the trailers are Chase The Shadow (Allinthegate) and Siyouni (Maxmillion Farm).
(1/2 Mile- :46.87)- We begin the backstretch portion of the race with Baby Come Back still up front and clear of the rest of the field. Post-time favorite Bottomless Mimosas is second, with the ability to pull up to her outside if she so desired. Schrodinger Con has a good trip going in the third position, situated just behind Baby Come Back, but clear of the others. It’s three wide just off the lead with Heavenly Body coming between Between Memories and The Wire. Tea Time and National Dreamer are about a length behind them, with not much else going on yet further back.
(Top of Stretch, 1.7F To Go)- Baby Come Back enters the stretch continuing to lead the way and has put away Bottomless Mimosas. However, the same cannot be said for Schrodinger Con, as that one continues to follow her while moving around the turn, to the top of the stretch. She’s still a length back but has nothing in her way now from scoring her first win in a major way. There’s quite a gap behind third place Bottomless Mimosas, as all three of Between Memories, The Wire, and Heavenly Body, were no longer able to keep up and only one horse was making a notable move from behind. That was National Dreamer, and she was full of run but needed to go four wide to get by tiring rivals. Otherwise, there was not much action further back.
(Finish- 1:40.62)- With a furlong to go, Schrodinger Con completes the pass of Baby Come Back and hopes to stay there until they hit the wire, but her work was not done yet. National Dreamer was in good stride on the outside and was giving it her best shot to get up there and snag the win away. Schrodinger Con ran well herself to the wire, and her own gritty effort, which certainly looked like a horse that had won before, is enough to get her to prevail over National Dreamer, with the official margin being a neck. Baby Come Back is third, with the began running way too late Chase The Shadow getting the fourth-place spoils. Tea Time and Bottomless Mimosas were next, with some distance to the rest of the field, which were Between Memories, The Wire, Heavenly Body, Once Freed, and Siyouni.
About The Winner- Schrodinger Con, trained by Big Guns Stables and ridden to victory by F Prat, is a two-year-old filly by Con Artist and is out of Gobekli Fire. She was bred in Ontario by her trainer, and they have been together throughout! Congratulations to the connections! This is her first career win, and her earnings improve to $144.000.
