Sod Specialists Look for Ticket to BC in Shadwell Turf Mile Showdown

The opening weekend of huge stakes actions continues here in Lexington as we take a look at the field for the Shadwell Turf Mile (GI) and the stars sure did come out to shine for this one!  What a nice group of horseflesh… but, what would you expect for one of the most prestigious turf races in the country?   I’m going to lean on the horse that seems to have the hot hand right now and take Last Way To The Beac today.  Back to back wins in the Read Stakes (GII) at DMR, then that scoring that huge purse in the Mint Million (GIII) at KD, he just screams that he is in top form and ready to take on the world (although, that may be in the next start).  I wanted to go with his stable mate, Penal Hockey Party to bounce back today, but let’s spread the love and give the second spot to Jakarta.  3/1/1 from his six ’23 starts, and was second in the United Nations (GI) and third in the Mint Million (GIII), plus all of his wins were vs. graded types… he just exudes class and ability.  Another that seems to have this race-horses thing figured out is Sioux Arrival… since the vet stopped by to tell him that girls are out of the questions, he’s won two consecutive, and that DMR Derby (GII) win was fairly head-turning… he has speed and he’s not afraid to use it, and that could spell adios if someone from this group doesn’t go with him.  There’s a few others that either seem to be sitting on a win or just need that little bit of something to get going… and that makes for one heck of a horse-race.
