Jessamine (Grade 2) (BC)- $350.000 Purse
KEE- For Fillies Two Years Old
One Mile and One Sixteenth on the Turf
October 6, 2023
Let Me Explain may have already been BC bound, but if there was any doubts about that, they were erased as this impressive two year old filly by People Pleaser picked up her fourth consecutive win in what was her first race going long. Safe to say, that went very well, and she didn’t look to run this in the same manner as she has become accustomed to early in her career. Up to this point, she has on or near the lead, but in the Jessamine saw her come from four lengths off the pace to ultimately win the race by two lengths, backing up our selection of her in the preview. She is trained by Mb Stables, and we can cross this one off the small list of graded stakes that he had not won yet. P Lopez was aboard, and it’s also first win in the Jessamine. Congratulations go out to them! The time of the win was 1:40.27, and that is a new stake record. Let’s take a look at it!
(1/4 Mile- :22.76)- Action Girl goes out to the lead for Diablo Diablo, and for a moment, Arkansas Elite’s Reaper Lightning runs right alongside her before Action Girl gets clear by a length early in the turn. These two build up approximately a two length cushion over the next group of pursuers, which is a group of three. On the rail, Fragrant is a half length ahead here for Mb Stables, and right there with her are Fruit Fly (Nakamura Stables) and Hardball (Smokey Stover). There’s three more right behind them, with Beat Down having a slight edge for TwinTowersRacing while running on the outside. Iffy (Mb Stables) is next while between horses, and that one to her inside is not only her stablemate, but also the race’s eventual winner in Let Me Explain. After about two lengths, there’s another trio, this consisting of Bank Run (Big Guns Stables), Vested Interest (Arindel), and Velocidad Construida (First Flight Stable). Rene West Rubicon (Oquinn Farm) is by herself at the back.
(1/2 Mile- :46.20)- Heading down the backstretch, Action Girl continues to lead the field, and has a full length lead over Reaper Lightning, who is now stalking right behind her. The former group of three right behind them has fallen apart, with Fragrant pulling ahead of the two while also running on the rail. Hardball tries to stay within a length of her, but Fruit Fly has lost some ground. Let Me Explain creeps a little closer, while looking to the inside of Fruit Fly and not needing to move from the rail. Beat Down continues to be nearby, but while running on the outside. Iffy has fallen a length behind her stablemate. Further back, Vested Interest and Bank Run led the rest of them, but had a lot of ground to make up.
(Top of Stretch, 1.8F To Go)- While rounding the turn, Action Girl was still in excellent stride, and seemed to be in position to get a great finish. Entering the stretch, she was still a length ahead of Reaper Lightning, and it was about two lengths back to the rest of the field. The pack was tightening up, with Hardball having the edge on them, for now. Fragrant struggled mightily in the turn and Fruit Fly was dropping out of it. Let Me Explain, along with Beat Down, were running level with the leaders, but they still had around three lengths to make up, and needed to do it on a leader that was still in good stride. Bank Run and Vested Interest were starting to pick it up, as well.
(Finish- 1:40.27)- Action Girl leads the way at the top of the stretch, but it would not take long before Let Me Explain began to make her run to the front. With a furlong to go, she had passed everyone but Action Girl and Reaper Lightning, but now had plenty of time to make up the needed ground. There was nothing that two pacesetters could do when they caught them, other than to watch Let Me Explain take command and pull away to an eventual two length win. We can always count on Mb Stables to have great two year olds, and this filly made a statement that she is at or near the top of that list. Action Girl does get second, while Reaper Lightning was caught by the late running Bank Run and they finish in a dead heat for show. It’s another length to Vested Interest, and then Hardball, Rene West Rubicon, Beat Down, Iffy, Fruit Fly, Fragrant, and Velocidad Construida.
About The Winner- Let Me Explain, trained by Mb Stables and ridden to victory by P Lopez, is a two year old filly by People Pleaser, and is out of Because. She was bred in New York by Mb Stables as a yearling, and they have been together throughout. Congratulations to the connections!
