Well, if this were real life, this six-year-old would have songs written about her, why? Well, just a look at her last three runs, and it pretty much sums it up. Making all to out-stay her rivals over a mile and three eighths at grade three level, then taking a six-and-a-half-furlong grade three and now a five-furlong dash for more black type glory. Is she a sprinter? Is she a long-distance warrior? How do we assess this performance? Well as we see so often, a BC Classic winner can work as fast as the sprinters over a short trip, so it seems that in the right conditions stamina or speed as we see it represented in real life thoroughbreds, doesn’t mean the same thing here at HRP. If a horse is good then it is good over any trip, it may be better over one, but it can have such a high rating that it can win over a trip that doesn’t suit it purely because of the computer rating that is churned out.
Enough of the speculation, because of course it is just this old writer chewing over possibilities. The fact remains that the trainer can produce miracles, I have seen it before, and I will see it again. They seem to be able to find something that many others can’t, and today this home bred produced a sprinting masterclass to win by a quarter-length in a swift winning time. That is two from two this year and, though she has always been pretty good, she may just have found a little extra in her sixth year.
2nd Antares Smokey Stover Lopez P
Used the wide gate speed push to rush into the lead and did really well to nearly hold on. She is a pretty fast daughter of Neon Wolf, but today she was only fast enough for four and a half furlongs after being held wide by Lady Of The Lord.
3rd Miss Fury Mb Stables Velazquez J R
Found a decent position, but things didn’t work out for her in the run to the line as of course the wider horses seem to go faster than the inner ones and she just whacked away for third.
4th Lady Of Lord Our Athletes Saez L
Crucially and to be expected, she couldn’t go fast enough to compete with the wide gate speed push, so ended up slipping back into the stalk. She much prefers being on the lead and that was obvious as she just kept on at the one pace down the stretch.
