The presence of horses coming off the TC trail might have inflated the odds of some entrants in the Grade III Dwyer at BEL but it felt like the best horses came to play going one-mile on the main track and Ufc Morals rebounded after faltering late in the Barrera at SA to upset rival Give Your All and score by a solid half-length. A son of Chainsaw Charley, who has already produced multiple stakes winners from limited breeding, he was bounced around from owner to owner in his early days but has settled into the barn of Tiratzo and now has two wins from six starts for the connections and almost $375.000 in earnings, along with a blistering 100-speed rating that is one of the best for his division all season long.
Outside speed was in full force to start the Dwyer as Dogs Got Wings (8.50) sprung off the gate before Ufc Morals (9.65) took the lead to his inside, with KYD champion Water Mummy (5.15) coming away in third. Those three separated themselves through the first split in 23.27 with Custer Of The West (10.45) out wide and Laffin Alicia (7.10) along the rail in midpack with Palestinian (*4.95) tucked in behind him along the fence. As Water Mummy raced to the lead heading into the far turn, Ufc Morals dropped back to third but still held his ground to keep Dogs Got Wings outside and through the half-mile in 46.56, they were still the targets with plenty of pace to chase. Around the bend, Dogs Got Wings wrested the lead by a scant margin before his rival came through with a determined thrust and at the head of the lane, Water Mummy began his retreat with Ratan (15.20) trying to close and Give Your All (8.95) coming very wide. Six-furlongs came up in a sprint-like 1:09.97 and two of the leaders were still there and with a furlong to run, Ufc Morals was still going strong with powerful strides to the wire and no one really charging into contention. Give Your All made a valiant run to nab second place over Dogs Got Wings with Ratan back in fourth but there was no doubt about the winner as Ufc Morals cruised under the line with a half-length to spare. Palestinian made a brief late move with Doctor Moriarty (6.80) along the rail, Water Mummy and Laffin Alicia did not have it in the lane, Custer Of The West backed up after racing in midpack and Foreigner (5.70) never got involved, failing with the addition of blinkers after a big win over the mud last time out.
Owner Tiratzo has had some tough beats with big purchases over the past couple of months but turned near $100.000 buy Ufc Morals into a Grade III winner here with a big score in the Dwyer, the first of three huge races heading into the Grade I Travers. It will be interesting to see where this colt goes in his next start, with the ultimate objective being either that prestigious 1 ¼ mile test or the equally impressive Grade I Kings Bishop at seven-furlongs, where he can certainly flaunt his front-running abilities against what should be a more reachable field.
Congratulations goes out to owner Tiratzo and their three-year-old colt Ufc Morals, a sharp front-running winner of the Grade III Dwyer at BEL!
