Chorleywood Stakes
CD Race #5 1 3/8m Turf Stake
Purse $175.000 For Four Year Olds And Upward.
1 Disciplinary Nakamura Stables Geroux F 124 —
This is an interesting race for this horse who has run his last three races in dirt sprints, winning the listed Shackleton and running a fair fifth in the Runhappy last time. Considering his work times which consist of a sub 1.36 dirt mile work he should be winning more races but just maybe the trainer has seen some five-year-old fairy dust, and he is ready to make a big impact especially in a race like this. We have to think he has shown the same pace in his turf works in private as he has his dirt works in public, so I rather think this one may be the dark horse in this race and could return some lucrative odds. The biggest drawback may be the 2Lb penalty he gets here
2 Dark Arts TwinTowersRacing Velazquez J R 122 —
Like anything from this yard, he has been thrown in many deep ends and to be fair to him has run some crackers. Fifth only beaten two lengths in last year’s BC Turf, he hasn’t shown that sparkle yet this year as a six-year-old, but he certainly has the race history to be a force at this level. Drawn perfectly and with an in-form AI on his back you have to give him a chance of returning to winning form.
3 Raging River Martyparty Gaffalione T 122 —
A lightly raced four-year-old he was progressing well through overnights and had started working like a stakes horse but was pretty disappointing when upped to that grade in his last start. He was so bad in the Louisville that it would be hard to see him turning that around, but we often see one inexplicable race a year with these horses, and if that was his, he certainly has the work times and draw to be competitive here.
4 Animal House Night Rider Stables Cedillo A 122 —
I am always wary of five-year-old improvement and this one wouldn’t have to be much improved to win this. A strong second on the dirt in the Californian, last time all of his wins have come on turf, so he could be ready to run big today. Interestingly considering his form he has worked slower than Raging River which would be considered weird a few years ago but these days the work times certainly don’t paint the picture they did before. A consistent sort who is a shoe in for top four and may just be ready to get back to winning today.
5 Broad Brush Czech Out Farms Saez L 122 —
He has been pretty disappointing recently and gets another chance to show his best form of former years today. I feel like he has had enough chances, and he would be a tough call to win today but if he came back to his best for some reason he could run well.
6 King Ranch Luz International Hernandez B J Jr 122 —
Consistent enough, he has been working strongly but at age seven they can often show more zip at home than on the racetrack. The wide draw shouldn’t worry him and may even help if he gets some speed push to keep him closer early on but there is a good chance the race engine will send him way out back and expect him to make up ten lengths in the stretch. His form and work times certainly put him right in this if he can make the wide gate work.
SUMMARY
An interesting race that I would be pretty strong on Disciplinary if he didn’t have the penalty. He may still be good enough to win but there is enough ability in the others that the 2 Lbs. could make all the difference. I think Dark Arts will run well but probably Animal House may be the one here in a race that is hard to predict.
