Well, boys and girls, we are down to the final trio of races for the ol’ Cozman… here, we catch opening day at SAR and a full field of freshman fillies for The Schuylerville, a six furlong test for the young ladies, and these races have befuddled me forever. Weather could play a factor here as it looks like rain for Wed, and Thur is 50/50, at the time of this being put together – updates may follow, so check back.
First, note that The Card and I agree on nuthin’ here, so there’s that. I landed on Down On The Beat as my top selection today. She looked solid breaking maiden in her second trip to the gate, at AQU, and came back to be a solid second over this track in the Astoria, on BEL day. That was a wet track, so she gets a check-mark there, never off the board in three tries, check, stakes placed, check… hard to fault her at this point in her brief career. Another stakes-placed horse is in the outside post, and Marina is my second pick in this race. This will be her fifth start, so she doesn’t spend a lot of time in the stall… she broke maiden at CT, was third in the Royal Palm Juv F at GP, and just missed at PRX in an Alw race, in her most recent trip to the gate… again, she checks all the boxes. The W9 barn has seen a bit of success with youngsters this spring/summer, so let’s put Auction Plate in the third spot. She broke maiden at first asking, down at PRX, then ran fourth in both the Royal Palm and Astoria… a couple lengths and she would be odds on. Still she deserves a big look.
